IntraAfrica Academic Mobility Scheme (IAAMS)

The IntraAfrica Academic Mobility Scheme (IAAMS) is an initiative of the African Union (AU) designed to increase the flow of students, researchers and academic staff across the continent. By facilitating affordable, safe and creditrecognised mobility, IAAMS aims to strengthen African universities, enhance research collaboration and contribute to socioeconomic development.

Core Objectives of IAAMS

1. Increase Access: Reduce financial and administrative barriers for African students and staff wishing to study or train in another African country.
2. Promote Credit Transfer: Establish a continentwide framework for recognizing academic credits and qualifications.
3. Enhance Quality: Foster the exchange of best teaching and research practices to raise standards across the region.
4. Support Regional Integration: Contribute to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) by creating a skilled, mobile workforce.

Key Features of the Scheme

1. Scholarship Grants

IAAMS offers fullyfunded scholarships for:

• Undergraduate exchange (onesemester to oneyear).
• Masters and doctoral research placements.
• Shortterm faculty development programmes (212 weeks).

2. Unified CreditRecognition System

All participating universities adopt the African Credit Transfer System (ACTS), which standardises credit points, learning outcomes and assessment methods. Student transcripts are digitally verified through an AUrun portal.

3. Streamlined Visa Procedures

Member states have agreed on a singlewindow visa application process for IAAMS participants. Applications are processed within 10 working days, with fees either waived or heavily subsidised.

4. Health & Safety Support

Each scholar receives a health insurance package covering emergency care, COVID19 testing and routine medical services during the mobility period. Dedicated IAAMS coordinators at host institutions assist with accommodation, orientation and local integration.

Eligibility & Application Process

Who can apply?

• Citizens of AU member states enrolled in a recognised tertiary institution.
• Academic staff holding a minimum of one year of teaching or research experience.
• Applicants must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 (or equivalent).

Steps to apply

1. Create a profile on the IAAMS portal.
2. Upload academic transcripts, passport copy and a motivation letter (max 500 words).
3. Select preferred host universities and programmes.
4. Secure a nomination from your home institutions International Office.
5. Submit the complete application before the annual deadline (normally 31March).

Challenges and the Way Forward

Despite early successes, IAAMS faces several hurdles:

• Funding Sustainability: Continued donor and government support is required to keep scholarships fully funded.

• Infrastructure Gaps: Some host institutions need upgrades in laboratories and digital libraries to accommodate incoming scholars.
