The Iowa Central Community College Performing Arts department invites prospective students to showcase their talents and secure financial support through our annual scholarship audition process. For students passionate about music and theatre, these auditions serve as the primary gateway to joining our vibrant artistic community and receiving recognition for their dedication to the arts.
Participating in our scholarship auditions is more than just a financial opportunity; it is an introduction to our faculty and our programs expectations. We pride ourselves on fostering an environment where students can grow, perform, and prepare for four-year institutions or professional careers. Scholarships are available to students regardless of their major, provided they participate in our ensembles and productions.
To succeed during your audition, it is important to be well-prepared and professional. While requirements may vary based on your area of focus, the following general guidelines apply to most candidates:
Instrumentalists and vocalists should prepare two contrasting pieces that demonstrate their technical ability and musicality. We encourage you to choose repertoire that highlights your strengths. If you are auditioning for a vocal scholarship, be prepared to share your range and demonstrate sight-reading skills if requested. Accompaniment is encouraged, though not always mandatory depending on the specific ensemble needs.
Theatre applicants are typically asked to prepare two contrasting monologuesusually one dramatic and one comedictotaling no more than three minutes. You should be prepared to discuss your past experience, technical theatre interests, and your goals for your time at Iowa Central. If you have a portfolio of design work or previous stage credits, feel free to bring those to support your presentation.
The audition day is designed to be a positive experience. You will have the opportunity to meet our instructors, ask questions about our curriculum, and tour our facilities. We view these auditions as a conversation rather than a high-pressure trial. Our faculty is genuinely interested in your potential and how you might contribute to the success of our upcoming concert seasons and theatrical productions.
Whether your passion lies in choral singing, jazz band, acting, or stage management, Iowa Central provides a platform for you to excel. Our scholarship program is designed to reward hard work and dedication, helping you manage the costs of higher education while you pursue your artistic aspirations. We look forward to seeing your talent and welcoming you into the Iowa Central family.
