Welcome to the Japanese Beginner Course. This syllabus is designed to provide students with a foundational understanding of the Japanese language, focusing on basic communication skills, reading, writing, and cultural context. Our goal is to prepare students for the JLPT N5 level by the end of this intensive program.
Course Objectives
- Master the three Japanese writing systems: Hiragana, Katakana, and basic Kanji.

- Learn basic vocabulary related to daily life, travel, and personal introduction.
Weekly Curriculum Breakdown
Students will begin by learning Hiragana and Katakana. Correct stroke order, pronunciation, and basic greetings will be emphasized. By the end of week two, students will be able to write and read simple phonetics.
Introduction to basic particle usage (wa, ga, o, ni, de). Topics include introducing oneself, telling time, daily routines, and basic shopping vocabulary. We will begin incorporating the first 20 beginner Kanji characters.
Focus shifts to descriptive adjectives (i-adjectives and na-adjectives). Students will learn how to describe their surroundings, family members, and preferences. We will practice asking and answering "how-to" questions and expressing desires using the "-tai" form.
In the final modules, students study the te-form of verbs, which is crucial for forming requests and continuous actions. Practical scenarios include ordering at a restaurant, asking for directions, and making plans for the weekend.
Assessment Methods

- Midterm Project: A five-minute recorded self-introduction in Japanese.
