Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) is a public university located in Juja, Kenya, approximately 45 kilometers northeast of Nairobi. Situated along the Nairobi-Thika Superhighway, the university occupies a serene environment conducive for learning and research. Historical Background
The universitys journey began in 1981 when it was established as Jomo Kenyatta College of Agriculture and Technology (JKCAT). It was established as a Middle Level College by the government of Kenya with the generous assistance from the Japanese government. It was initially tasked with training manpower specifically for the agricultural sector, which was the backbone of the country's economy.
Following the high demand for technical education, the college continued to expand its curriculum. In 1988, JKCAT was elevated to a constituent college of Kenyatta University through a legal notice. This marked a significant shift in its status, allowing it to offer degree programs. Four years later, in 1994, JKCAT was transformed into a full-fledged university. This was done through the JKUAT Act, Cap 210, of the Laws of Kenya. Since then, the university has experienced exponential growth, evolving from a purely agricultural institution to a dynamic multi-disciplinary university.
Over the decades, JKUAT has established several constituent colleges and campuses across Kenya, including those in Nairobi, Nakuru, Mombasa, and Kisii. This decentralization strategy has allowed the university to bring higher education closer to the people, ensuring that more Kenyans have access to its prestigious programs.
