Jose Protacio Rizal Mercado y Alonzo Realonda, commonly known as Jose Rizal, stands as the paramount figure in the history of the Philippines. Born on June 19, 1861, in the town of Calamba, Laguna, Rizal was a polymath, a novelist, a physician, and a revolutionary who became the primary catalyst for the Philippine Revolution against Spanish colonial rule.

Early Life and Education

Rizal was the seventh of eleven children born to Francisco Mercado and Teodora Alonso Realonda. His mother, an educated and resilient woman, was his first teacher, instilling in him a love for literature and the arts. Showing brilliance from a young age, Rizal pursued his studies at the Ateneo Municipal de Manila, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree with highest honors. During his time in Europe, Rizal became a leading member of the Propaganda Movement, a group of Filipino expatriates who campaigned for political and social reforms in the Philippines.
