Kerala Teacher Eligibility Test (K-TET)

The Kerala Teacher Eligibility Test (K-TET) is a state-level examination conducted by the Pareeksha Bhavan, Kerala, under the directives of the Department of General Education, Government of Kerala. The primary objective of this test is to assess the eligibility of candidates aspiring to become teachers for Lower Primary, Upper Primary, and High School classes in the schools of Kerala.

Note: Qualifying the K-TET is a mandatory requirement for recruitment as a teacher in government and aided schools across the state, in alignment with the guidelines laid down by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE).

Examination Categories

K-TET is categorized into four distinct papers based on the level of schooling:

  • Category I: For teachers intending to teach Lower Primary classes (Classes I to V).
  • Category II: For teachers intending to teach Upper Primary classes (Classes VI to VIII).
  • Category III: For teachers intending to teach High School classes (Classes VIII to X).
  • Category IV: For Language Teachers (Arabic, Hindi, Sanskrit, Urdu), Specialist Teachers (Art & Craft, Sewing), and Physical Education Teachers for classes up to High School.

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates must meet specific educational qualifications to apply for the different categories:

  • Category I: Higher Secondary/Senior Secondary with at least 45% marks and a 2-year Trained Teachers Certificate (TTC) or Diploma in Elementary Education.
  • Category II: B.A./B.Sc./B.Com. degree and a 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education or B.Ed.
  • Category III: B.A./B.Sc./B.Com. with at least 45% marks and a B.Ed. degree in the relevant subject.
  • Category IV: Candidates must possess a certificate, diploma, or degree in the specific specialty or language for which they are applying, as prescribed by the government.

Exam Pattern and Syllabus

The K-TET exam is conducted as an objective-type test. Each paper consists of 150 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), and the duration of each exam is 150 minutes (2.5 hours). Each question carries one mark, and there is no negative marking for incorrect answers.

The syllabus covers various subjects including:

  • Child Development and Pedagogy
  • Language I (Malayalam/Tamil/Kannada)
  • Language II (English/Arabic)
  • Subject-specific content (Mathematics, Environmental Studies, Social Science, or Science depending on the category)

Qualifying Marks

To be declared as K-TET qualified, candidates must secure the minimum marks as specified by the government:

  • General Category: 60% marks (90 out of 150).
  • SC/ST/OEC/OBC Categories: A relaxation is provided, requiring 55% marks (82 out of 150).

Validity of the Certificate

Once a candidate qualifies for the K-TET, the certificate remains valid for a lifetime, as per the latest notifications from the Ministry of Education. This provides permanent eligibility for candidates to apply for teaching positions in the state, subject to meeting other recruitment criteria such as age and specific school requirements.

Preparation Tips

Successful candidates often emphasize the following preparation strategies:

  • Understand the Syllabus: Thoroughly review the official syllabus provided by the Pareeksha Bhavan.
  • Previous Year Question Papers: Solving past papers is the most effective way to understand the exam pattern and question difficulty.
  • Focus on Pedagogy: Since the test evaluates teaching aptitude, devote sufficient time to the Child Development and Pedagogy section.
  • Time Management: Practice answering questions within the time limit to ensure all 150 questions can be attempted during the actual exam.

The K-TET exam serves as a gateway for maintaining high standards in the teaching profession within Kerala. By ensuring that only qualified individuals enter the classroom, the state aims to improve the quality of education provided to its students.
