Historical Background
The King Sejong Institute (KSI) was established in 2007 by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Korea. It is named after King Sejong the Great (13971450), the fourth monarch of the Joseon Dynasty, who created Hangul, the Korean alphabet, in 1443. Just as King Sejongs invention made literacy accessible to the Korean people, the institute aims to make Korean language education accessible to the world.
Initially launched as a single language center in Seoul, the concept quickly expanded. By the end of its first decade, more than 300 institutes were operating in over 80 countries, making KSI one of the fastestgrowing language networks worldwide.
