Korean Language & Culture Curriculum

Program Overview

The Korean Language & Culture curriculum is designed for learners who wish to develop functional communication skills while gaining a deep appreciation for Koreas rich heritage. It blends language instruction with cultural immersion, enabling students to use Korean confidently in everyday situations, academic settings, and professional contexts.

Typical participants include highschool students, university undergraduates, expatriates, and business professionals. The program can be delivered in classroom, online, or hybrid formats, and it aligns with the ACTFL and CEFR proficiency scales.

Learning Objectives

• Develop oral proficiency for conversations, presentations, and negotiations.
• Achieve reading comprehension of modern texts (news, blogs, academic articles) and classical materials (folk tales, historical documents).
• Write coherent essays, emails, and reports using appropriate registers.
• Understand and apply Korean honorifics, speech levels, and regional dialects.
• Identify key cultural concepts such as jeong, han, and nunchi.

Curriculum Structure

The curriculum is organized into four progressive modules, each lasting eight weeks. The modules build upon one another, allowing learners to reach higher proficiency levels while deepening cultural insight.

• Speaking: roleplays, pronunciation drills, and oral presentations.

Cultural Modules

• History & Society: the Three Kingdoms, Joseon Dynasty, modern development, and diaspora.
• Traditions & Rituals: Seollal, Chuseok, tea ceremony, hanbok etiquette.
• Arts & Entertainment: hanok architecture, pansori, Kpop choreography, Korean cinema.
• Food Culture: cuisine vocabulary, cooking demonstrations, etiquette at meals.
• Business & Technology: corporate communication, startup vocabulary, IT terminology.

Assessment Methods

Assessment balances skill testing with cultural competency. It includes:

• Weekly quizzes on vocab and grammar.
• Listening comprehension tests using audio clips.
• Oral exams (conversation and presentation).
• Reading assignments followed by short answer questions.
• Written tasks: emails, essays, and project reports.
• Culture portfolio: a collection of reflective essays, video diaries, and creative projects.
• Final integrated exam covering all four language skills and cultural understanding.

Grades follow a transparent rubric that highlights accuracy, fluency, appropriateness of register, and depth of cultural insight.
