The Path of Kriya Yoga

A Guide to Initiation and Spiritual Awakening

In the vast landscape of spiritual traditions, Kriya Yoga stands out as a profound and scientific method for achieving direct communion with the Divine. Often described as the "airplane route" to God, as opposed to the slower "footpath" of other disciplines, Kriya Yoga offers a systematic approach to controlling the life force within the body. However, practicing this sacred technique is not merely a matter of reading a book or following a video; it requires a formal entry into the lineage known as Kriya Yoga Initiation.

What is Kriya Yoga?

Kriya Yoga is an ancient meditation technique that was revitalized in modern times by the legendary avatar Mahavatar Babaji and brought to the West by Paramhansa Yogananda, author of the spiritual classic Autobiography of a Yogi. The word "Kriya" means "action," and in this context, it refers to specific actions performed to withdraw the mind and energy from the outer senses and direct them inward toward the spine and the brain.

By practicing Kriya, the yogi learns to decouple the breath from the sensory experience of the external world. This process purifies the blood and the nervous system, allowing the life force (prana) to circulate freely around the six spinal centers (chakras). The result is a gradual but profound expansion of consciousness, leading to states of superconsciousness and eventually enlightenment.

The Significance of Initiation

Initiation is the formal ceremony through which a qualified guru transmits the power of the technique to the student. In the yogic tradition, this transmission is often referred to as shaktipat or the "descent of grace." While one might intellectually understand the mechanics of Kriya Yoga, the spiritual energy required to practice it effectively must be awakened.

Initiation serves several vital functions:

  • Transmission of Energy: The guru acts as a conduit, infusing the student with the spiritual vibration of the lineage. This energy helps the students nervous system handle the increased prANA generated by the practice.
  • Establishing a Bond: The ceremony creates a deep, subtle link between the disciple and the line of gurus, offering protection and guidance on the spiritual journey.
  • Correct Instruction: The complex techniques of Kriya Yoga are taught in person or via specific initiation rituals to ensure they are performed correctly, preventing physical or mental strain.

The Lineage of Gurus

Kriya Yoga is distinct because it is preserved through a lineage of realized masters. The current lineage, as made famous by Paramhansa Yogananda, traces its roots back through a chain of unbroken spiritual succession:

The lineage begins with Mahavatar Babaji, the deathless yogi who rediscovered and clarified the lost technique of Kriya. Babaji taught it to Lahiri Mahasaya of Benares, who was a householder yogi and the first to teach the technique openly to the sincere seeker. Lahiri Mahasaya passed the torch to Swami Sri Yukteswar, Yoganandas guru, who was a master of astrology and scripture. Finally, Sri Yukteswar commissioned Paramhansa Yogananda to carry the teachings to the West.

When one receives initiation, they are not just learning a technique; they are joining this stream of consciousness that has flowed for centuries.

Preparation for Initiation

Initiation is a sacred commitment. It is not taken lightly by the teacher or the student. Most reputable organizations that offer Kriya initiation require a period of preparation. This ensures the student is physically, mentally, and emotionally ready for the high voltage of spiritual energy that Kriya produces.

Disciplines and Practices

Before receiving initiation, students are often asked to specific preparatory techniques, such as the Energization Exercises (taught by Yogananda to recharge the body with cosmic energy) and the Hong-Sau technique (a concentration method that observes the breath).

Lifestyle adjustments are also frequently encouraged. These may include:

  • Diet: Adopting a vegetarian or largely plant-based diet to increase sensitivity and calmness.
  • Recreation: Avoiding excessive intoxicants or stimulants that cloud the mind.
  • Study: Reading spiritual texts, particularly the Autobiography of a Yogi, to attune the mind to the vibrations of the path.
  • Ethics: Practicing the Yamas and Niyamas (moral restraints and observances) such as non-violence, truthfulness, and contentment.

The Ceremony of Initiation

The initiation ceremony itself is a solemn and beautiful event. While the exact details may vary between different organizations and lineages, the core essence remains the same: the awakening of the divine potential within the student.

Typically, the ceremony involves a ritual where the student vows to maintain a regular practice and to keep the technique sacred. The teacher then performs the rite of priya (blessing). The student is instructed on the specific technique of Kriya Yogahow to breathe, how to position the body, and how to mentally focus.

Crucially, the first Kriya is usually practiced under the direct guidance of the initiator. This allows the teacher to correct the students posture and mental focus immediately. It is often said that one round of Kriya practiced correctly under the gaze of the guru is more powerful than weeks of solitary practice without grace.

The Disciple's Commitment

After the ceremony, the responsibility shifts to the disciple. Kriya Yoga is not a magic pill; it is a path of self-effort. The student is generally expected to practice the technique twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening.

Consistency is paramount. The practice works by gradually magnetizing the spine and brain. Irregular practice dissipates this buildup, much like charging a battery only to let it drain repeatedly. Daily meditation becomes the anchor of the disciples life.

Deeper Levels of Kriya

Initiation into the First Kriya is just the beginning. The path is multi-layered. As the student practices and deepens their surrender to the Divine, they may become eligible for Higher Kriyas.

The Second Kriya, for instance, involves more advanced techniques of pranayama (energy control) and bhakti (devotion). Subsequent Kriyas help the yogi move their consciousness up through the spinal centers, eventually transcending the body entirely and resting in the Aum vibration. These higher initiations are given as the spiritual eye opens and the student demonstrates growth in devotion and regularity.

The Fruits of the Practice

Why does one embark on this path? The rewards of Kriya Yoga are both immediate and long-term.

In the short term, practitioners often report a profound sense of peace, increased energy, better health, and improved concentration. The mind becomes calmer, and the emotional roller coaster of life begins to stabilize. One feels a connection to a higher power, regardless of their religious background.

In the long term, the goal is Nirbikalpa Samadhithe state of unconditioned oneness with God. In this state, the soul realizes its identity with the Infinite. The cycle of rebirth is broken, and the yogi becomes a liberated being. While this lofty goal may seem far away at the time of initiation, every step taken on the Kriya path brings the practitioner closer to that ultimate reality.

Finding a Teacher

If you feel drawn to this path, it is essential to seek out a legitimate organization or teacher representing the lineage. The grace of the guru is necessary, and one cannot "steal" the technique from books. Look for groups that emphasize devotion, service, and meditation, and that trace their lineage back to Babaji, Lahiri Mahasaya, or Paramhansa Yogananda.

Initiation is an open door. It requires the courage to step through, the discipline to walk the path, and the love to surrender the ego to the Divine will. For those who are ready, Kriya Yoga offers a timeless science of spirituality that can lead to the highest summit of human existence.

Are you ready to begin?

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Preparation is the key to a successful initiation.
