Lake Chad, situated at the crossroads of Chad, Cameroon, Nigeria, and Niger, has long been a crucial source of water, food, and livelihood for millions of people. Over the past several decades the lake has shrunk dramatically, prompting regional and international concern about water security, biodiversity loss, and the social stability of the Sahel.
The lake lies in the Sahelian zone of northern Africa, about 300km east of the Niger River. Its watershed covers roughly 890,000km, making it one of the largest endorheic (closedbasin) systems on the continent. Historically the lakes surface area fluctuated seasonally between 10,000km and 30,000km, with an average depth of only 1.5m. Because it is fed primarily by the seasonal inflow of the ChariLogone river system, water levels rise dramatically during the rainy season (JuneSeptember) and recede during the dry months.
Satellite imagery and historic maps reveal that Lake Chad reached its maximum extent in the early 1960s, covering about 25,000km. Since then the lake has lost roughly 90% of its surface area, shrinking to around 1,5002,000km in the 2010s. Several interrelated factors explain this decline:
Despite its shallow depth, Lake Chad supports a surprisingly rich ecosystem:
More than 150 fish species inhabit the lake, including commercially important Nile perch (Lates niloticus) and tilapia (Oreochromis spp.). Declining water levels have fragmented habitats, leading to reduced fish catches and threatening local food security.
The lake forms part of the Lake Chad Basin Important Bird Area, hosting migrations of flamingos, pelicans, and Eurasian waders. Seasonal flooding creates extensive reed beds that serve as nesting grounds.
Surrounding wetlands support populations of hippopotamus, African manatee, and the critically endangered West African giraffe in peripheral savanna. Diminished water sources have forced many of these species to travel farther in search of suitable habitats.

One of the most ambitious proposals is to interconnect Lake Chad with the nearby Congo River basin via a series of canals and reservoirs, potentially supplying an additional 20km of water per year. Predictive models suggest that without decisive action, Lake Chad could shrink to a series of isolated puddles by 2050, profoundly affecting regional stability. Conversely, integrated waterresource management, climateadapted agriculture, and transboundary cooperation could stabilize water levels and restore ecological functions.
Lake Chad remains a linchpin of life in the Sahelian heart of Africa. Its dramatic shrinkage over the last halfcentury illustrates the intertwined challenges of climate change, population growth, and unsustainable water use. By combining sciencebased management, regional cooperation, and community engagement, the lakes future can shift from a narrative of loss to one of renewal.
