What Is the Difference?

National parks are areas of ecological importance set aside for the protection of ecosystems and wildlife. Human activities such as hunting, grazing, and forestry are generally prohibited, and tourism is tightly regulated.

Wildlife sanctuaries also aim to protect wildlife but often allow limited human activity like controlled grazing, collection of forest products, or settlements that existed before the sanctuarys declaration.

Major National Parks

• Jim Corbett National Park (Uttarakhand) Established in 1936, it is the oldest national park in India and famous for Bengal tigers, leopards, and over 600 bird species.
• Kaziranga National Park (Assam) A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it shelters the worlds largest population of Indian onehorned rhinoceros, along with elephants, wild water buffalo, and tigers.

• Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary (Karnataka) A wetland sanctuary attracting migratory birds such as painted storks, spot-billed pelicans, and kingfishers.
• Namdapha National Park & Tiger Reserve (Arunachal Pradesh) Though a national park, its surrounding sanctuary protects the Himalayan red panda, clouded leopard, and hornbill species.
• Vembanad-Kol Wetland (Kerala) A Ramsar site supporting fish, migratory birds, and the endangered otter.
• Kanha Tiger Reserve (Madhya Pradesh) While designated as a tiger reserve, its sanctuary zones protect the barasingha (swamp deer) and gaurs.

The northern belt includes parks such as Great Himalayan National Park (Himachal Pradesh), Valley of Flowers (Uttarakhand), and Singalila National Park (West Bengal). These protect alpine meadows, rhododendron forests, and rare species like the snow leopard, musk deer, and red panda.

Western Ghats

Recognised as a biodiversity hotspot, the Western Ghats host sanctaries like Silent Valley (Kerala), Bandipur (Karnataka), Periyar (Kerala), and Wayanad (Kerala). They safeguard endemic amphibians, caecilians, and over 500 bird species.

Eastern Plains & IndoGangetic Delta

Key protected areas include Sultanpur National Park (Uttar Pradesh), Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary (Kerala), and the Sundarbans. These wetlands are critical for migratory waterfowl and fish breeding.

Desert & SemiArid Zones

In the arid heartland, parks such as Desert National Park (Rajasthan) and Tal Chhapar (Rajasthan) protect the great Indian bustard, chinkara, and desert fox.

• Best time to visit: Generally, October to March offers pleasant weather and good wildlife visibility.
• Permits: Most parks require a permit, which can be obtained online or at the parks entry gate.
• Guided safaris: Official guides enhance chances of spotting elusive species and ensure safety.
• Responsible tourism: Stick to designated trails, avoid littering, and respect distance guidelines for animals.

Conservation Challenges

Despite legal protection, Indian protected areas face threats such as poaching, habitat fragmentation, humanwildlife conflict, and climate change. Initiatives like communitybased conservation, tiger and elephant corridor projects, and citizen science monitoring are helping to mitigate these pressures.
