  8. Draw the conclusion. State the final result succinctly, referencing the premises that support it.
Example (Deductive Reasoning)

Premise 1: All mammals are warmblooded.
Premise 2: All whales are mammals.
Conclusion: Therefore, all whales are warmblooded.

Common Errors in Logical Reasoning

Even skilled thinkers can fall into predictable traps. Awareness of these fallacies helps prevent faulty conclusions.

  • Strawman fallacy: Misrepresenting an opponents argument to make it easier to attack.
  • Appeal to ignorance (argumentum ad ignorantiam): Claiming something is true because it has not been proven false.
  • False cause (post hoc ergo propter hoc): Assuming that because B follows A, A caused B.
  • Begging the question (circular reasoning): The conclusion is assumed in one of the premises.
  • Hasty generalization: Drawing a broad conclusion from a small or unrepresentative sample.
  • Slippery slope: Arguing that a minor first step inevitably leads to extreme outcomes without evidence.
