Protecting Our Marine Environment

Why It Matters

The worlds oceans cover more than 70% of the Earths surface and produce over half of the oxygen we breathe. They regulate climate, store carbon, and provide food and livelihoods for billions of people. Healthy marine ecosystems support fisheries, tourism, and cultural traditions while protecting coastlines from storms and erosion.

When marine environments degrade, the consequences cascade through the entire planet. Loss of biodiversity reduces resilience, while pollution and acidification threaten food security, health, and economies.

Key Threats to Marine Health

1. Plastic Pollution

Every year, an estimated 8million metric tons of plastic enter the ocean. Microplastics are ingested by fish, seabirds, and marine mammals, moving up the food chain and ultimately reaching humans.

2. Overfishing

Unsustainable fishing practices have depleted stocks of many species. According to the FAO, around 34% of global fish stocks are overfished, jeopardizing food security for coastal communities.

3. Climate Change

Rising sea temperatures cause coral bleaching, while ocean acidification weakens shells of mollusks and crustaceans. Sealevel rise also threatens mangroves and saltmarsh habitats.

4. Habitat Destruction

Coastal development, dredging, and bottomtrawling damage essential habitats such as coral reefs, seagrass meadows, and mangrove forests, which serve as nurseries for many marine species.

5. Chemical Pollution

Runoff containing fertilizers, pesticides, and heavy metals creates dead zonesareas with too little oxygen to support most marine life.

What We Can Do

Individual Actions

  • Reduce singleuse plastic: Choose reusable bottles, bags, and utensils.
  • Support sustainable seafood: Look for MSCcertified labels.
  • Conserve water: Less runoff means fewer pollutants entering the ocean.
  • Participate in beach cleanups and citizenscience projects.

Community & Business Initiatives

  • Implement wastemanagement systems that capture plastics before they reach waterways.
  • Adopt green port practices such as shore power for ships to cut emissions.
  • Invest in marineprotected areas (MPAs) that restrict harmful activities.
  • Promote ecotourism that funds conservation while respecting local ecosystems.

Policy & Global Solutions

  • Enforce stricter fishing quotas and bans on destructive gear.
  • Support international agreements such as the Paris Agreement and the UN Sustainable Development Goal14 (Life Below Water).
  • Fund research and restoration projects for coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrass.
  • Introduce extended producer responsibility (EPR) for plastic packaging.

Success Stories

Mangrove restoration project

1. Mangrove Restoration in Vietnam

Local NGOs partnered with coastal communities to plant over 500ha of mangroves. Within five years, fish catches increased by 30% and shoreline erosion dropped dramatically.

2. Plastic Capture in the Ganges River

A lowcost trashintercept system installed at key points of the Ganges has removed more than 1,200tons of waste, preventing it from reaching the Bay of Bengal.

3. MarineProtected Area in the Great Barrier Reef

Expansion of the reefs notake zones has led to a 40% rise in biomass of key fish species, demonstrating the power of wellmanaged MPAs.
