Overview
The Marshall Scholarship is a prestigious postgraduate award that enables highachieving American students to pursue graduate study in the United Kingdom. Established in 1953 by the British government in gratitude for the Marshall Plan, the scholarship aims to strengthen the special relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom by creating a network of future leaders who have lived, studied, and built professional ties in both countries.
Each year, the program selects up to 40 scholars (or more in some years) to study at any UK university for one or two years, covering tuition, living expenses, and travel. Scholars may pursue a wide range of subjectsfrom the sciences, engineering, and medicine to the humanities, social sciences, and the arts.
Eligibility
Citizenship: Must be a U.S. citizen.
Education: Must hold a bachelors degree from an accredited U.S. college or university, with a graduation date no earlier than May of the year prior to application.
Academic record: Typically a GPA of 3.7 or higher; exceptional academic achievement is expected.
Age: No formal age limit, but most candidates are recent graduates.
Degree focus: Can apply for a taught or research degree at any UK university (excluding the University of Cambridge for predoctoral research).
Commitment: Must intend to return to the U.S. for a period of employment or research after the scholarship ends.

Application Process
The selection cycle generally follows this timeline:
Early September MidOctober: Campus nomination forms are released. Students must first secure a nomination from their home institution.
MidOctober Early December: Nominated candidates submit the national application, which includes personal statements, academic transcripts, three letters of recommendation, and a detailed study plan.
Late January Early February: Regional interview panels (usually held in the U.S.) assess candidates.
MidFebruary: Finalists are invited to interview in London.
Late February Early March: Selections are announced and scholars begin preparing for travel.
