Lesson Activities (4560 minutes)
Warmup (5 min) Ask students: Whats on your plate for lunch today? Record a few answers on the board.
Introduce MyPlate (8 min) Show the MyPlate diagram, explain each quadrant, and discuss the halfplate rule for fruits and vegetables.
Group Sorting Game (12 min) In small groups, students sort food picture cards into the correct MyPlate sections. Encourage discussion about why an item belongs where it does.
PortionSize Demonstration (8 min) Using scales or measuring cups, demonstrate a serving of each food group (e.g., 1 cup of broccoli, 1 ounce of meat).
Build Your Own Plate (15 min) Students use a paper plate or template to create a balanced meal. They must label each section, write the portion size, and include at least one item from each group.
Reflection & Goal Setting (5 min) Students write one personal foodchoice goal for the next week (e.g., Add a fruit snack each afternoon).
