National Means cum Merit Scholarship (NMMS)

The National Means cum Merit Scholarship (NMMS) scheme is a prestigious initiative launched by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, to provide financial assistance to meritorious students from economically weaker sections. The primary objective of the scheme is to arrest the dropout rate at the secondary school level and encourage students to continue their education up to the higher secondary stage.

Objective of the Scheme

The NMMS scheme aims to support students who have completed Class VIII and intend to pursue their education in Class IX, X, XI, and XII. By providing a monthly scholarship, the government seeks to reduce the financial burden on families, ensuring that talented students do not abandon their studies due to lack of resources.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the NMMS scholarship, students must meet specific criteria set by the Department of School Education and Literacy:

• The student must be enrolled in a Government, Government-aided, or Local Body school.
• The student must have passed Class VIII examination with at least 55% marks (or an equivalent grade) from a recognized school. A relaxation of 5% is usually provided for SC/ST students.
• The parental annual income from all sources must not exceed a specified threshold (currently set at 3,50,000 per annum).
• Students studying in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas, Kendriya Vidyalayas, Sainik Schools, or private residential schools are generally not eligible for this scholarship.

Examination Pattern

The selection of students for the scholarship is made through an examination conducted by the State Governments. The examination consists of two main papers:

Scholarship Amount and Duration

Selected students are awarded a scholarship of 12,000 per annum (1,000 per month). This scholarship is provided for a maximum of four years, covering classes IX through XII. The continuation of the scholarship in subsequent years depends on the student maintaining satisfactory academic progress and being promoted to the next grade.

Application Process

The application process is typically handled through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP). Students are advised to keep the following documents ready:

• Income Certificate issued by a competent authority.
• Caste Certificate (if applicable).
• Mark sheet of Class VII/VIII.
• Domicile certificate or proof of school attendance.
• Bank account details (preferably seeded with Aadhaar).
