NCERT Solutions for Class 9 Geography Chapter 1: India - Size and Location

Understanding the geographical position, extent, and size of India is fundamental to the Social Science curriculum. This chapter provides insights into how Indias location influences its climate, trade, and strategic importance in the world.

Overview of Chapter 1

India is one of the ancient civilizations in the world. It has achieved multi-faceted socio-economic progress during the last five decades. Moving forward from the basic concepts of latitude and longitude, this chapter covers the vast expanse of the Indian subcontinent, its neighbors, and its position in the Indian Ocean.

Important Exercise Questions and Answers

Q1. Choose the right answer from the four alternatives given below:
(i) The Tropic of Cancer does not pass through: Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Tripura, Odisha.
Answer: Odisha.

(ii) The easternmost longitude of India is: 97 25' E, 68 7' E, 77 6' E, 82 32' E.

Q2. Answer the following questions briefly:
(i) Name the group of islands lying in the Arabian Sea.
The Lakshadweep Islands are located in the Arabian Sea.
(ii) Name the countries which are larger than India.
The countries larger than India in terms of area are Russia, Canada, USA, China, Brazil, and Australia.
(iii) Which island group of India lies to its south-east?
The Andaman and Nicobar group of islands lie to the south-east of the Indian mainland in the Bay of Bengal.
(iv) Which island countries are our southern neighbors?
The two island countries that are our southern neighbors are Sri Lanka and the Maldives.
Q3. The sun rises two hours earlier in Arunachal Pradesh as compared to Gujarat in the west but the watches show the same time. How does this happen?
The earth rotates from west to east. Because of this, there is a time lag of about two hours between Gujarat and Arunachal Pradesh. Since the longitudinal extent of India is about 30 degrees, the sun travels across these degrees at a rate of 4 minutes per degree. To avoid time confusion and maintain a standard time for the entire country, the meridian of 8230'E passing through Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh is taken as the Standard Meridian of India. Thus, the whole country follows a single time zone.
Q4. The central location of India at the head of the Indian Ocean is considered of great significance. Why?
Indias central location at the head of the Indian Ocean is highly significant because:
  • It provides a strategic central location between East and West Asia.
  • India is southward extension of the Asian continent.
  • The trans-Indian Ocean routes connect the countries of Europe in the West and the countries of East Asia, providing a strategic central location.
  • No other country has a long coastline on the Indian Ocean as India has, which justifies the naming of the ocean after it.

Key Concepts Summary

  • Location: India is a vast country lying entirely in the Northern hemisphere. The mainland extends between latitudes 84'N and 376'N and longitudes 687'E and 9725'E.
  • Size: The landmass of India has an area of 3.28 million square kilometers, accounting for 2.4 percent of the total geographical area of the world.
  • Land Frontiers: India has a land boundary of about 15,200 km and the total length of the coastline is 7,516.6 km.
