NCLEX-RN Exam Cram Sheet: Essential Survival Guide

Preparing for the NCLEX-RN is a monumental milestone in every nursing students career. As you approach your test date, balancing thousands of pages of nursing theory can be overwhelming. This cram sheet is designed to help you synthesize critical, high-yield information for quick review.

1. Prioritization and Delegation (The ABCs)

On the NCLEX, you will be tested heavily on your ability to make clinical judgments. When facing multiple patients, always prioritize using these frameworks:

  • Airway, Breathing, Circulation (ABC): Always address the airway first, followed by breathing, then circulation.
  • Maslows Hierarchy: Physiological needs (oxygen, water, food) must be met before safety and psychological needs.
  • Acute vs. Chronic: Prioritize patients with acute, unstable conditions over those with stable, chronic issues.
  • Delegation: Remember that RNs are responsible for assessment, teaching, and nursing judgment. You cannot delegate the Nursing Process (ADPIE) to Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP) or LPN/LVNs.

2. Laboratory Values Essentials

Knowing the normal ranges is vital for identifying critical patient data. Memorize these key values:

  • Potassium (K+): 3.55.0 mEq/L (Critical for cardiac rhythm)
  • Sodium (Na+): 135145 mEq/L
  • WBC: 5,00010,000/mm
  • Hemoglobin: 1218 g/dL
  • Platelets: 150,000400,000/mm
  • Digoxin Level: 0.52.0 ng/mL
  • INR: 0.81.2 (2.03.0 for patients on Warfarin)

3. Common Pharmacological Mnemonics

Pharmacology is a vast subject. Focus on drug classes rather than individual names:

  • Beta-Blockers (-olol): Watch for bradycardia and bronchospasms.
  • ACE Inhibitors (-pril): Watch for a dry, persistent cough and angioedema.
  • SSRI Antidepressants (-opram): Used for anxiety/depression; can take 4 weeks to see full effect.
  • Steroids (-sone): Watch for hyperglycemia, weight gain, and risk of infection due to immunosuppression.

4. Therapeutic Communication Tips

The NCLEX is looking for the "therapeutic" nurse. Avoid advice-giving, "why" questions, and false reassurance.

  • Use Open-Ended Questions: Allow the patient to tell their story.
  • Focus on Feelings: If a patient is expressing distress, acknowledge their feelings before diving into data collection.
  • Avoid "Why": Asking "Why" often makes the patient feel defensive. Instead, ask "Tell me more about what you are feeling."

5. Infection Control Precautions

Know which diseases require which type of isolation:

  • Airborne (My Chicken Hez TB): Measles, Chickenpox (Varicella), Herpes Zoster, TB. Requires N95 mask and negative pressure room.
  • Droplet (SPIDERMAN): Sepsis, Scarlet fever, Pertussis, Influenza, Diphtheria, Epiglottitis, Rubella, Mumps, Adenovirus. Requires surgical mask.
  • Contact: MRSA, VRE, C. Diff, RSV. Requires gown and gloves.

6. Test-Taking Strategy

When in doubt, think like an NCLEX author. The exam is looking for safety and professional accountability. Always ask yourself:

  1. Is this answer safe?
  2. Does this answer address the patients most immediate physiological threat?
  3. If the question asks for the "first" action, is it an assessment or an intervention? (Usually, you must assess before you intervene).

Stay calm, pace yourself, and remember your nursing education. You have worked hard for this moment, and your critical thinking skills will guide you to success.
