Comprehensive Guide to the NDA Exam Syllabus

The National Defence Academy (NDA) examination is one of the most prestigious competitive exams in India, serving as the gateway for young candidates to join the Army, Navy, and Air Force wings of the NDA. Understanding the syllabus is the first and most critical step in preparing for this dual-stage selection process.

Exam Structure Overview

The written examination consists of two main papers: Mathematics and the General Ability Test (GAT). Both papers are objective in nature, and candidates must perform well in both to qualify for the Services Selection Board (SSB) interview.

Paper Subject Duration Maximum Marks
Paper I Mathematics 2.5 Hours 300
Paper II General Ability Test (GAT) 2.5 Hours 600

Paper I: Mathematics

The Mathematics section tests the candidate's conceptual clarity and problem-solving ability at the 10+2 level. Key topics include:

  • Algebra: Concept of sets, Venn diagrams, De Morgan laws, Cartesian product, relations and equivalence relations. Complex numbers, quadratic equations, and arithmetic, geometric, and harmonic progressions.
  • Calculus: Concepts of real-valued functions, limits, continuity, and differentiation. Application of derivatives in rate of change, maxima, and minima.
  • Matrices and Determinants: Operations on matrices, types of matrices, determinant of a square matrix, and inverse of a matrix.
  • Trigonometry: Angles and their measures, trigonometric functions, inverse trigonometric functions, and applications in heights and distances.
  • Analytical Geometry: Rectangular Cartesian coordinate system, distance formula, equations of lines, circles, and conic sections.
  • Vector Algebra: Scalar and vector products, magnitude, and direction of vectors.
  • Statistics and Probability: Frequency distribution, classification of data, mean, median, mode, and basic probability theory.

Paper II: General Ability Test (GAT)

The GAT paper is divided into two parts: English and General Knowledge. It is designed to test the candidates language proficiency and awareness of their surroundings.

Part A: English (200 Marks)

The English syllabus focuses on testing a candidate's understanding of English and workmanlike use of words. It includes:

  • Grammar and Usage
  • Vocabulary and Synonyms/Antonyms
  • Comprehension and Cohesion in extended text
  • Sentence Improvement and Spotting Errors

Part B: General Knowledge (400 Marks)

This section is extensive, covering various fields of knowledge. The syllabus is broad, intended to measure general intelligence rather than specialized knowledge.

  • Physics: Physical properties and states of matter, mass, weight, volume, density, motion, force, work, energy, sound, electricity, and magnetism.
  • Chemistry: Physical and chemical changes, preparation of elements, atomic structure, and chemical bonding.
  • General Science: Basic biology, human body, common epidemics, and awareness of scientific developments.
  • History: Broad survey of Indian history, with emphasis on culture, civilization, freedom movement, and global impacts.
  • Geography: Earth as a planet, ocean currents, tides, atmosphere, and major natural regions of the world.
  • Current Events: Knowledge of important current affairs happening in India and across the world, including sports, awards, and international relations.

Preparation Strategy Tips

Success in the NDA exam requires a disciplined approach. Candidates should focus on the NCERT textbooks for the Mathematics and Science portions, as they form the foundation of the syllabus. For current affairs, consistent reading of newspapers and monthly magazines is essential. Regularly practicing previous year question papers will help students manage their time effectively during the actual examination.
