New India Assurance Motor Policy Frequently Asked Questions
General Questions
1. What types of motor insurance does New India Assurance offer?
New India Assurance provides three core motor policies:
- ThirdParty Liability (TP) mandatory by law, covers injury or death of third parties and property damage caused by the insured vehicle.
- Comprehensive (Own Damage + TP) covers thirdparty liability plus damage to your own car caused by accidents, fire, theft, natural calamities, etc.
- Own Damage (OD) Policy optional addon for fleet or corporate customers who already have thirdparty cover elsewhere.
Addon covers such as Zero Depreciation, Engine & Gearbox Protection, and Personal Accident can be bought with a comprehensive policy.

Any Indian resident who owns a motor vehicle registered in India can purchase the policy individuals, private companies, NGOs and fleet owners alike. The vehicle must be registered with the Regional Transport Office (RTO) and have a valid registration certificate (RC) at the time of purchase.
3. How is the premium calculated?
Premium is a function of several variables:
- Vehicle type (car, twowheeler, threewheeler, commercial)
- Age of the vehicle
- Insured Declared Value (IDV) the market value of the car for a comprehensive policy
- Geographical zone (zones IIV based on accident frequency)
- Noclaim bonus (NCB) discount for claimfree years
- Selected addons (Zero Depreciation, Engine Protection, etc.)
- Policy term (normally 12 months) and payment mode (annual, halfyearly, quarterly)
The insurer uses a standard rate chart regulated by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI). A quick online quote can give an exact figure.
Coverage & AddOns
4. What does a comprehensive policy cover?
A comprehensive policy includes:
- Thirdparty liability as per Motor Vehicles Act
- Owndamage due to accidental collision, overturn, fire, explosion, natural disasters, vandalism, theft or burglary
- Loss or damage caused by manmade perils (terrorism, civil unrest)
- Legal expenses incurred for defending a claim
The sum insured for thirdparty liability is the statutory minimum (7.5 lakh for death, 2.5 lakh for injury, and 5 lakh for property damage). The owndamage sum equals the IDV you declare.
5. What are the popular addon covers?
- Zero Depreciation (Zero Dep) eliminates depreciation on replaceable parts such as tires, batteries, and glass.
- Engine & Gearbox Protection covers repairs caused by oil leakage, water ingress, or overheating.
- Personal Accident Cover for OwnerDriver provides a lumpsum benefit in case of death or permanent total disability.
- Roadside Assistance towing, battery jumpstart, fuel delivery, and lockout assistance.
- Key Replacement reimburses cost of key replacement in case of loss or theft.
Addons are optional and can be selected at policy inception or during renewal.
6. Is there a waiting period for any claim?
Yes. Most addons (Zero Dep, Engine Protection) have a 30day waiting period from the policy start date before they become effective. The base comprehensive policy has no waiting period for coverages except for burglary/theft, which requires the vehicle to be locked and secured.

Claims Process
10. What is the stepbystep claim procedure?
- Intimate the insurer within 24 hours of the incident. Use the 24hour helpline or the Claim section on the website/app.
- Collect necessary documents FIR (if applicable), RC copy, original policy, claim form, photos of damage, repair estimate, and a selfdeclaration.
- Vehicle inspection an approved surveyor will assess the damage and prepare a loss report.
- Approval & settlement once the claim is approved, the insurer will either release the repair bill to the workshop (cashless) or reimburse you after you submit the bills (reimbursement).
- Postsettlement the claim is closed and a NoClaim Bonus (NCB) adjustment is made for the next renewal.
11. How long does a claim take to settle?
For cashless claims processed through a network garage, settlement is usually completed within 710 business days after the surveyors report. Reimbursement claims may take 1215 days depending on document verification.
12. What if I cannot locate the vehicle at the time of the accident?
If the vehicle is stolen or missing, file an FIR immediately and inform the insurer. The claim will be processed under the Total Loss Theft clause, and the insurer will settle based on the IDV after deducting any applicable deductible.
Renewal, Discounts & Miscellaneous
13. How does the NoClaim Bonus work?
For every claimfree year, the NCB increases by 5% up to a maximum of 50% (or 60% if you have a voluntary deductible). The discount is automatically applied on renewal. If a claim is made, the NCB resets to the level applicable before the claim year (or to the protected NCB if you have that addon).
14. Can I transfer my existing policy to a new vehicle?
Yes. If you sell your current car and purchase a new one, you may swap the policy within 30 days of registration of the new vehicle. A fresh premium will be calculated based on the new IDV, and any remaining unexpired period of the old policy will be proportionally adjusted.
15. Are there any discounts for specific groups?
New India Assurance offers the following:
- Women driver discount up to 5% for female policyholders.
