Overview

The Local Government Districts (LGDs) of Northern Ireland are responsible for delivering a wide range of public services, from housing and waste management to community development and economic regeneration. Employment within these councils forms a substantial part of the regional labour market, offering a variety of roles ranging from administrative support to senior management and specialist technical positions.

In 2023, the combined publicsector workforce across all 11 district councils was estimated at around 13,500 employees, representing roughly 5% of the total workforce in Northern Ireland.
