Northwestern University

History

Northwestern University was founded in 1851 by nine men who sought to create a stronger relationship between the Western frontier and the intellectual centers of the East. The original charter called for a university that would combine the liberal arts tradition of the Ivy League with a practical focus on the emerging sciences and professional studies. The first classes were held in temporary facilities in downtown Chicago, but the university soon moved to its present 240acre Evanston campus along the shores of Lake Michigan.

Over the next century Northwestern grew rapidly, adding professional schools in law (1859), medicine (1859), and business (1908). The universitys reputation for academic rigor and interdisciplinary collaboration was cemented during the 20th century, especially with the establishment of the School of Communication (1929) and the Graduate School (1909). Today Northwestern is a private research university with campuses in Evan Evan and downtown Chicago, as well as a satellite campus in Qatar.
