Older People's Rights Service

Dedicated to protecting, promoting, and advocating for the rights of elderly individuals in our community.

About Our Service

The Older People's Rights Service (OPRS) is a not-for-profit organization committed to safeguarding the dignity, respect, and rights of older adults. For over 15 years, we have been providing advocacy, support, and empowerment to seniors facing challenges related to their rights and wellbeing.

Our vision is a society where all older people can live with dignity, free from discrimination, abuse, and neglect. We believe that age should never be a barrier to accessing services, justice, or opportunities in life.

Our team consists of experienced advocates, legal experts, and social care professionals who work collaboratively to address the unique challenges faced by older adults in our community.

Decision-Making Support

Current Challenges

Despite legal protections, older adults continue to face numerous challenges that affect their rights and quality of life:

"Every day, approximately 1 in 6 older people experience some form of abuse. This devastating reality underscores the critical need for services like OPRS that stand up for the dignity and rights of our elderly population."

Age Discrimination

Many older adults encounter unfair treatment in healthcare, employment, and services due to their age, limiting their opportunities and access.

Financial Exploitation

Seniors are often targeted by scams, fraud, and financial abuse by family members or trusted individuals, leaving them vulnerable.

Healthcare Access

Ageism in healthcare can lead to inadequate treatment, misdiagnosis, and dismissive attitudes from medical professionals.

Social Isolation

Limited social connections, mobility constraints, and lack of accessible transport contribute to loneliness and diminished quality of life.

Housing Insecurity

Many older adults struggle with unsuitable living conditions, lack of accessibility modifications, and threats of homelessness.

Digital Exclusion

Increasing digitalization of services leaves many seniors unable to access essential resources without appropriate support.

Understanding Your Rights

Knowledge is power. Understanding your rights as an older adult is the first step toward ensuring they are respected. Our service educates seniors about these fundamental rights:

Right to Dignity

Every older person has the right to be treated with respect and dignity, free from humiliation or degrading treatment.

Right to Autonomy

Older adults have the right to make their own decisions about their lives, healthcare, finances, and living arrangements.

Right to Equality

Age should never grounds for discrimination. Everyone has the right to equal treatment regardless of age.

Right to Privacy

Older adults have the right to personal privacy, including confidential medical records and personal space.

Right to Safety

All seniors have the right to live free from abuse, neglect, exploitation, and violence.

Right to Participation

Older people have the right to participate in society, community activities, and decisions that affect them.

Success Stories

Real stories of how we've made a difference in the lives of older adults:

Margaret's Story

At 78, Margaret was facing utility shutoff due to confusion about billing. Our advocates helped her understand the situation, connected her with financial assistance programs, and arranged for a local volunteer to help with monthly bill management. Margaret now feels secure and supported.

Robert's Journey

After suffering a stroke, Robert had difficulty communicating his wishes about his care. Our team helped him create an advance directive and facilitated family meetings to ensure his preferences would be honored. Robert maintains independence and dignity in his living situation.

Elsie's Victory

When Elsie was denied a mobility scooter she desperately needed, our legal team helped her appeal the decision. After presenting medical evidence and advocating for her rights, the decision was overturned, restoring Elsie's independence and ability to participate in community life.
