For Lecturers at FKIP UMSGuide to Using Google Classroom
Google Classroom is a free web service developed by Google for educational institutions, designed to simplify creating, distributing, and grading assignments in a paperless environment. For lecturers at FKIP UMS (Faculty of Teacher Training and Education at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta), Google Classroom offers a powerful tool to enhance the teaching and learning experience while supporting the university's digital transformation initiatives.
Why use Google Classroom at FKIP UMS?
Before using Google Classroom, ensure you have a Google account. As a FKIP UMS lecturer, you likely have access to a university Google account. Contact the IT department if assistance is needed.
Visit accounts.google.com and sign in using your UMS email address and password.
Go to classroom.google.com or access it through the Google apps menu (nine dots icon).
Click the "+" button in the top right corner to create a new class or join an existing one.
Click the "+" button and select "Create class."
Fill in class name, section, subject, and room, then click "Create."
Add a theme, cover image, and adjust class settings as needed.
Two methods to add students:
Tip: Use clear naming conventions for classes (e.g., "Pendidikan Bahasa Indonesia - Semester Genap - Kelas A") to help both you and students stay organized.
Share various resources with students through Google Classroom:
In the Classwork tab, click "Create" and select "Material."
Enter a title, instructions, and attach resources from Drive, YouTube, or the web.
Assign the material to an existing topic or create a new one.
Best Practice: Create topics for different units, weeks, or themes to help students navigate content systematically.
In Classwork, click "Create" and select "Assignment."
Add title, instructions, point value, and due date.
Add necessary resources for completing the assignment.
Choose whether to make copies of files for each student.
Select topic and click "Assign" to post to students.
Google Classroom integrates with Google Forms for automatic quizzing:
In Classwork, click "Create" and select "Quiz assignment."
Create questions in Google Forms, selecting correct answers for automatic grading.
Enable quiz settings and feedback options in Forms.
Complete assignment details and post to students.
Post announcements to the Stream to communicate with all students at once. Share important information, reminders, or relevant news.
For communication about specific assignments, use private comments when reviewing submissions. Both you and the student can see these comments, which remain hidden from others.
Control which notifications you receive through the Settings menu. Choose to be notified about comments, late submissions, and other activities.
Helps detect potential plagiarism by comparing student submissions against webpages and books. Particularly useful for maintaining academic integrity at FKIP UMS.
Save time by reusing content from previous classes. Select "Reuse post" from the Create menu to copy assignments, materials, or questions.
Add compatible educational websites and apps to enhance functionality. Allow students to submit work created in external platforms directly to Classroom.
Contextual Note: As you use Google Classroom, consider explicitly discussing the pedagogical reasons behind your choices. This meta-discussion can help future teachers understand both practical aspects of educational technology and underlying teaching principles.
