Parsing Arabic Nominal Sentences Using Context-Free Grammar

The study of Arabic computational linguistics requires a deep understanding of both syntactic structure and the traditional rules of Classical Arabic (Al-Nahw). Nominal sentences, known as Al-Jumla Al-Ismiyya, constitute one of the two primary sentence structures in the Arabic language. Parsing these sentences using Context-Free Grammar (CFG) provides a robust framework for natural language processing applications, such as machine translation, automated grammar checkers, and speech recognition.

The Structure of Nominal Sentences

Challenges in Computational Parsing

Parsing Arabic presents unique challenges compared to Latin-script languages. The primary difficulty lies in the richness of morphology and the flexible word order. While the standard order is Subject-Predicate, Arabic allows for fronting, where the predicate may precede the subject for rhetorical emphasis (e.g., "Fi al-dar-i rajulun" - "In the house is a man"). A CFG must include rules for these inversions to maintain high recall in natural language processing tasks.
