Pharmacy First is an innovative pilot service that allows specially trained pharmacists to provide assessment and treatment for uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) in eligible patients, without the need for a doctor's appointment. The Pharmacy First UTI service offers convenient, accessible care closer to home. It helps reduce pressure on GP surgeries while providing timely treatment to relieve your symptoms faster. All pharmacies participating in this pilot have undergone additional training and assessment to ensure they can provide safe, effective care for UTIs. They follow strict clinical guidelines and protocols. Find a pharmacy near you that is part of the Pharmacy First pilot and let them know you're experiencing UTI symptoms. No appointment is needed, though you may want to check opening times. The pharmacist will conduct a confidential consultation in a private room to assess your symptoms, medical history, and any medications you're currently taking. Following approved clinical protocols, the pharmacist will determine if your symptoms indicate an uncomplicated UTI that can be treated through this service. If eligible, the pharmacist will provide appropriate antibiotic treatment and advice on managing your symptoms. They may also recommend lifestyle changes to prevent future UTIs. The pharmacist will advise when to seek further medical help if your symptoms don't improve. If your condition is beyond the scope of this service, they'll direct you to appropriate care. For patients in England, Scotland and Wales, consultations through this service are free under the NHS. If you require prescription antibiotics, these are also free of charge. No appointment is necessary. You can visit a participating pharmacy during their opening hours. However, for your convenience, some pharmacies may offer the ability to book a specific consultation slot. If your symptoms haven't improved after 48 hours of treatment, or if they worsen at any point, you should contact your GP or NHS 111 for advice. If you develop fever, back pain, or feel very unwell, seek immediate medical attention. This pilot service is intended for occasional, uncomplicated UTIs. If you experience frequent UTIs (more than 2-3 times per year), you should consult your GP who may recommend preventive strategies or investigate underlying causes. While not always required, it's helpful to bring: Yes, with your consent, the pharmacist will send a consultation summary to your GP practice to ensure your medical records are complete.
