Understanding the interdependence of human health and the Earths natural systems
What is Planetary Health?
Planetary health is a scientific and policy framework that examines how the health of human populations is linked to the state of the planets natural systems. It recognises that the biosphere forests, oceans, soils, and the atmosphere provides essential services such as clean air, safe water, food, and disease regulation. When these systems are degraded, the foundations of human health weaken.
Human health is a reflection of the condition of the natural world. Planetary Health Alliance
The field emerged in the early 2010s in response to mounting evidence that environmental change was no longer a peripheral issue for medicine but a central determinant of disease, mortality, and wellbeing.
Key Drivers of Planetary Health Decline
Four interrelated forces are most frequently cited as the primary drivers of planetary health challenges:
Climate Change rising temperatures, extreme weather, and shifting disease vectors.
LandUse Change deforestation, urban expansion, and agricultural intensification that disrupt ecosystems.
Pollution air, water, and soil contamination from industry, agriculture, and waste.
Biodiversity Loss species extinction and reduced ecosystem resilience, weakening natural disease regulation.
These drivers are synergistic; for example, deforestation contributes to carbon emissions, which accelerate climate change, which in turn fuels the spread of vectorborne diseases.
Health Impacts Across the Globe
Infectious Diseases
Climatedriven changes in temperature and precipitation expand the geographic range of mosquitoes, ticks, and sandflies. Malaria, dengue, Zika, and Lyme disease are now reported in regions that previously had little or no transmission.
Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs)
Air pollution contributes to an estimated 7 million premature deaths each year, primarily through cardiovascular and respiratory illnesses. Similarly, exposure to heavy metals and endocrinedisrupting chemicals is linked to cancers, diabetes, and developmental disorders.
Food and Nutrition Security
Soil degradation, reduced fisheries, and extreme weather undermine food production. Nutrientdeficient crops and rising food prices aggravate undernutrition and increase the risk of obesity, as populations shift toward cheaper, highly processed foods.
Mental Health
Environmental stressorssuch as loss of green space, climaterelated displacement, and economic insecurityare associated with higher rates of anxiety, depression, and suicide.
Solutions & Actions
Addressing planetary health requires coordinated action across sectors, scales, and societies. Below are ten evidencebased strategies that can be implemented by governments, businesses, professionals, and individuals.
Decarbonise Energy Systems accelerate the transition to renewable electricity, improve energy efficiency, and phase out coal.
Protect and Restore Natural Habitats expand protected areas, reforest degraded lands, and adopt naturebased solutions such as mangrove restoration.
Implement Sustainable Food Systems promote plantrich diets, reduce food waste, and support regenerative agriculture.
Strengthen ClimateResilient Health Infrastructure build hospitals that can operate during extreme events and integrate climate forecasting into public health planning.
Reduce Pollution Sources enforce stricter emissions standards, invest in clean public transport, and promote safer chemicals management.
Promote BiodiversityFriendly Practices protect pollinators, limit pesticide use, and encourage wildlife corridors in urban planning.
Foster Interdisciplinary Research fund collaborations between ecologists, epidemiologists, economists, and social scientists.
Engage Communities empower local groups to participate in monitoring environmental changes and codesign health interventions.
Adopt One Health Approaches integrate human, animal, and environmental health surveillance to anticipate emerging threats.
Educate and Advocate incorporate planetary health concepts into school curricula, professional training, and public media.
