Understanding Grammar: Prescriptive vs. Descriptive

In the study of linguistics, the way we approach language rules generally falls into one of two categories: prescriptive or descriptive. While both deal with how language functions, they serve fundamentally different purposes and reflect different philosophies regarding how language should be used and studied.

Prescriptive Grammar: The Rule-Set

Prescriptive grammar is concerned with establishing "correct" or "standard" usage. It functions like a manual for language, providing a set of rules that speakers and writers are expected to follow to achieve a high standard of communication, often associated with formal education, professional environments, or literary excellence.

Think of prescriptive grammar as the guardian of linguistic standards. It is the type of grammar taught in traditional school classrooms, where students are told not to end a sentence with a preposition, to avoid splitting infinitives, or to distinguish strictly between "who" and "whom." The primary goal of prescriptivism is to maintain a uniform language that ensures clarity and prestige across different regions and social groups.

Descriptive Grammar: The Observation

Descriptive grammar, by contrast, acts as a mirror rather than a manual. It does not attempt to tell people how they "should" speak; instead, it observes and documents how people actually do speak. Linguists who take a descriptive approach analyze the patterns, slang, dialects, and grammatical shifts inherent in living languages.

For a descriptive grammarian, if a significant number of native speakers use a certain constructionsuch as using the singular "they" to refer to a person of unknown genderthat construction is considered valid. Descriptive grammar recognizes that language is a dynamic, evolving entity. It seeks to explain the logic behind vernacular speech rather than labeling it as "wrong" or "broken."

The Key Differences

The tension between these two approaches can be summarized by their focus:

  • Goal: Prescriptive grammar aims for consistency and authority. Descriptive grammar aims for accurate observation and recording of human behavior.
  • Judgment: Prescriptive grammar classifies language as "correct" or "incorrect." Descriptive grammar classifies language as "grammatical" (natural to a native speaker) or "ungrammatical" (deviating from the mental rules of the speaker).
  • Evolution: Prescriptive grammar often resists change to preserve historical standards. Descriptive grammar tracks how language changes over time as societies evolve.

Why Both Matter

It is a common misconception that these two approaches are enemies. In reality, they serve different functions in society. Prescriptive grammar is essential in formal contextssuch as writing legal contracts, academic papers, or professional correspondencewhere a standardized set of rules helps prevent ambiguity and signals professional competence.

Descriptive grammar is essential for understanding how human language works at a cognitive level. It helps us document endangered languages, analyze the evolution of dialects, and understand the social factors that influence the way we talk to one another in everyday life.

Ultimately, recognizing the difference between the two helps us become better communicators. It allows us to be precise in formal settings while remaining empathetic and observant of the organic, fluid nature of language in our daily interactions.
