What Is a Primary Colour?
Primary colours are the basic hues that cannot be created by mixing other colours together. In colour theory they act as the building blocks for all other colours, known as secondary and tertiary colours. By combining two primary colours you obtain a secondary colour, and by further mixing with a primary you produce tertiary shades.
Colour Models that Use Primary Colours
1. Additive (Light) Model RGB
The additive model is used for devices that emit light, such as computer monitors, televisions, and stage lighting. Its primary colours are:
- Red
- Green
- Blue
When red, green and blue light are combined at full intensity, the result is white light. Mixing two at a time yields cyan, magenta, or yellow the secondary colours of the additive system.
2. Subtractive (Pigment) Model RYB
The traditional artschool model uses red, yellow and blue as its primaries. These are the colours most people learn when they first pick up a paintbrush.

When mixed, they produce orange, green and violet the secondary colours of the subtractive system. The model reflects how pigments absorb (subtract) wavelengths of light.
3. Modern Print Model CMYK
Printing relies on cyan, magenta, yellow and black (key). Cyan, magenta and yellow act as the practical primaries because they cover a broader range of hues than the simple RYB set.

When all three are combined in equal amounts they produce a dark brownish colour; black ink is added to achieve true depth.

Historical Perspective
The concept of primary colours has evolved over centuries. Early philosophers like Aristotle believed in a limited set of elemental colours. In the 17th century, Isaac Newtons prism experiments demonstrated that white light contains a spectrum of colours, leading to the first colour wheel.
Artists such as Johannes Itten (Bauhaus) formalised the RYB model for painting, while scientists like James Clerk Maxwell formalised the RGB additive system for light. The CMYK model emerged in the late 19th century with the rise of colour lithography.
