For a graft to be successful, the cambium layers (the thin layer of actively dividing cells between the bark and the wood) of both the scion and the rootstock must be aligned and held firmly in contact. This allows the plants to fuse together as they heal.
Grafting is commonly used for fruit trees like apples, pears, and stone fruits. There are several methods of grafting, including cleft grafting, whip-and-tongue grafting, and side grafting. The chosen method depends largely on the diameter of the rootstock and the time of year. Generally, grafting is performed in late winter or early spring while the plants are still dormant.
Success requires strict hygiene, sharp tools to ensure clean cuts, and the use of grafting tape or wax to prevent the union from drying out before the vascular tissues have connected.
Budding is essentially a form of grafting where the scion is reduced to a single bud with a small sliver of bark or wood attached. It is often more efficient than grafting because it requires less scion wood, allowing a nursery to produce many more plants from a single parent tree.
The most popular method is T-budding, where a T-shaped slit is made in the bark of the rootstock. The bud is then inserted under the flaps of the bark and secured with a budding strip. Budding is typically performed in the summer when the bark is "slipping"meaning the bark peels easily away from the wood due to active growth.

Even with careful technique, grafting and budding can fail. The most important factors to consider are physiological compatibility (the plants must be closely related botanically), proper alignment of the cambium, and the maintenance of a humid environment around the graft union until healing is complete. As the grafted plant grows, it is crucial to remove any "suckers"shoots that sprout from the rootstock below the graft unionto ensure that the rootstock's energy is directed entirely into the growth of the scion variety.
