Proverbs and Idioms

Third Grade Language Arts Unit

What Are Proverbs?

A proverb is a short, wellknown saying that expresses a general truth or piece of advice. Proverbs are part of everyday speech, and they often use simple language that children can understand.

Examples:

  • A stitch in time saves nine.
  • Practice makes perfect.
  • Dont judge a book by its cover.

These sayings are passed down from generation to generation. They help us share wisdom in a memorable way.

What Are Idioms?

An idiom is a phrase whose meaning cannot be guessed from the literal definitions of its words. Idioms sound like ordinary sentences, but they have a special, figurative meaning that is understood by people who speak the same language.

Examples:

  • Its raining cats and dogs. it means its raining heavily.
  • Break the ice. to start a conversation or make people feel comfortable.
  • Hit the books. to study hard.

Because idioms are culturally specific, they give students a glimpse into how language works in real life.

Each morning display a new proverb. Students write a short entry explaining the proverb in their own words and give an example from their life.

4. RolePlay Dialogues

Write short dialogues that include idioms. Students rehearse and perform, helping each other understand the figurative meaning.

5. Create a Class Book

After several weeks, compile the learned proverbs and idioms into a class book. Each entry includes: the expression, definition, illustration, and a sentence written by the student.
