Program Overview

The Secondary PostDegree Professional Program (SPDP) is a specialised, intensive pathway designed for graduates who already hold a bachelors degree and wish to gain professional qualifications in a secondaryeducation context. It blends pedagogical theory, curriculum design, and schoolbased practicum to prepare candidates for certification as secondary teachers.

Key Components of the Curriculum

1. Foundations of Teaching and Learning

This module covers educational psychology, inclusive pedagogy, assessment strategies, and classroom management. Emphasis is placed on evidencebased practice and reflective teaching.

2. SubjectSpecific Pedagogy

Students select a teaching specialization (e.g., Mathematics, Science, Languages, Humanities) and study how to design effective learning experiences for that discipline. Coursework includes curriculum mapping, resource development, and the integration of technology.

3. Research and Inquiry

All candidates complete a smallscale research project that investigates a realworld classroom issue. This component develops critical thinking and datadriven decisionmaking.

4. Professional Placement

During the placement (minimum 12 weeks), students are embedded in a partner secondary school, delivering lessons under the mentorship of a qualified teacher. Performance is assessed through lesson observations, a teaching portfolio, and reflective journals.

Entry Requirements September2021 Cohort

• Recognised bachelors degree (minimum 2:2). For nonlocal degrees, an assessment by the admissions office is required.
• Proof of English proficiency (IELTS6.5 overall, with no band below 6.0, or equivalent).
• Criminal record check and working with children clearance.
• Two academic references, one of which must be from a former lecturer.
• Personal statement (max500 words) outlining career aspirations and suitability for secondary teaching.

Fees and Funding

Domestic tuition for the fulltime route is 9,500 per academic year. International students pay 13,200 per year. The programme offers a limited number of scholarships based on academic merit and teaching potential.
