About the Library
Established in 1992, the Sheth Shree B.C. Shah Arts College Library is the intellectual heart of the college. Spread over 2,500 square feet, the library houses more than 35,000 volumes covering literature, history, philosophy, languages, social sciences and fine arts. The collection reflects the colleges commitment to preserving regional heritage while embracing contemporary academic trends.
Designed by renowned architect S. M. Patel, the building combines natural light with quiet study zones. Wooden shelves, comfortable ergonomicallydesigned seating, and a dedicated research annex make it a welcoming space for students, faculty, and visiting scholars.
Facilities
Reading Halls
Two spacious reading halls accommodate up to 120 students at a time. Each hall is equipped with power outlets, WiFi, and adjustable lighting.
Reference Section
The reference section contains encyclopedias, dictionaries, almanacs, and rare manuscripts that cannot be taken out of the library.
Periodicals Corner
Over 300 current periodicals and 1,200 backissue copies are available for inhouse consultation.
Multimedia Lab
Computer workstations with highspeed internet, audiovisual equipment, and a collection of CDs, DVDs, and ebooks support multimedia learning.
Discussion Rooms
Four soundproof discussion rooms can be booked for group projects, seminars, or thesis presentations.
Caf Area
A small caf serves tea, coffee, and light snacks, encouraging informal study and networking.
Services Offered
- Circulation: Students may borrow up to 10 books for 21 days. Renewals are possible online or at the circulation desk.
- InterLibrary Loan (ILL): Access to resources from partner institutions across Gujarat and beyond.
- Reference Assistance: Trained librarians provide guidance on research strategies, citation formats, and source evaluation.
- Document Delivery: Scanned copies of articles and book chapters can be emailed to authorized users.
- Workshops & Training: Regular sessions on information literacy, digital tools, and academic writing.
- Archives & Special Collections: A curated set of rare books, local newspapers, and manuscripts related to Gujarats cultural history.
Digital Resources
The library has embraced the digital age with the following initiatives:
Online Catalog (OPAC): A webbased searchable database that lists all holdings, availability status, and location. Users can place holds, track due dates, and receive email notifications.
EBooks & EJournals: Subscriptions to platforms such as JSTOR, SpringerLink, Project MUSE, and EBSCOhost provide access to thousands of scholarly titles.
Digital Repository: Faculty and students can deposit theses, dissertations, and research papers, ensuring longterm preservation and open access.
Learning Management Integration: The librarys resources are linked directly to the colleges LMS, allowing seamless access from course pages.
