Instead of looking for a "typical" case, the researcher purposefully seeks out individuals or settings that are as different from one another as possible regarding the phenomenon of interest.
The strength of maximal variation sampling lies in its ability to highlight the complexity and breadth of a phenomenon. If a theme or finding emerges from a group of people who are vastly different from one another, that finding carries greater weight and credibility. It provides a more comprehensive understanding of the range of experiences, making the research results more robust and applicable to a wider context.
The choice between snowball and maximal variation sampling depends largely on the research question and the nature of the target population. If the goal is to access a hard-to-reach group, snowball sampling is the pragmatic choice. If the goal is to explore the diversity of an experience and gain a deep, nuanced understanding across different contexts, maximal variation sampling is superior.
In many research designs, these strategies are not mutually exclusive. A researcher might use maximal variation to select initial participants to ensure diversity, and then utilize snowball sampling within those diverse subgroups to reach individuals who might otherwise be hesitant to participate. Ultimately, both methods exemplify the qualitative commitment to selecting cases that offer the greatest potential for insight rather than merely seeking large numbers of participants.
