Specially Designed Instruction: A Comprehensive Overview

Specially Designed Instruction (SDI) is a cornerstone of special education. It is defined by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) as adapting, as appropriate to the needs of an eligible child under this part, the content, methodology, or delivery of instruction to address the unique needs of the child that result from the childs disability.

The Core Purpose of SDI

The primary goal of SDI is to ensure that students with disabilities have access to the general curriculum and can meet the educational standards that apply to all children within their jurisdiction. Unlike accommodations or modifications, which might change how a student accesses learning or what they are expected to learn, SDI changes the actual instruction provided by the educator.

Key Components of SDI:
  • Content: Modifying the complexity or depth of the material taught.
  • Methodology: Utilizing specialized teaching techniques (e.g., multisensory instruction, systematic phonics).
  • Delivery: Changing how the information is presented (e.g., small group intensity, one-on-one instruction, or visual scaffolding).

Who Qualifies for SDI?

SDI is reserved for students who have been evaluated and identified as having a disability that significantly impacts their ability to progress in the general curriculum. This determination is made by an Individualized Education Program (IEP) team. Once identified, the team develops goals and identifies the specific SDI needed to help the student reach those goals.

Common Approaches to Providing SDI

SDI is not a "one-size-fits-all" solution. It is tailored to the individual profile of the student. Common strategies include:

  • Explicit Instruction: Providing clear, direct explanations of concepts, breaking tasks into smaller steps, and providing immediate feedback.
  • Scaffolding: Providing temporary supportsuch as graphic organizers, sentence starters, or visual aidsthat are gradually removed as the student gains mastery.
  • Multi-Sensory Approaches: Using visual, auditory, and kinesthetic inputs simultaneously to reinforce learning, particularly effective for students with dyslexia or processing deficits.
  • Systematic Instruction: Utilizing data-driven sequences of skills that move from simple to complex, ensuring that prerequisites are mastered before moving forward.

SDI vs. Accommodations: Understanding the Difference

It is common to confuse SDI with accommodations, but they serve different functions. Accommodations, such as extended time on tests or sitting near the teacher, do not change the instructional content; they remove barriers to learning. SDI, conversely, involves the teacher changing their instruction to teach the student differently. If a student is receiving only accommodations, they are not receiving SDI.

The Role of Data in SDI

Effective SDI is dynamic. Because it is designed to meet specific needs, teachers must regularly collect data to monitor progress. If a student is not making progress toward their IEP goals, the IEP team must reconvene to adjust the methodology or the intensity of the instruction. Progress monitoring is the feedback loop that ensures the "specially designed" component of the instruction remains effective.

Collaboration and Implementation

SDI is most effective when general education and special education teachers collaborate. While special educators often lead the delivery of SDI, general educators play a vital role in identifying when instructional methods need to be adjusted within the classroom setting. When SDI is integrated into the general education classroom, it fosters an inclusive environment where all students benefit from high-quality, targeted instruction.
