Summer Reading Assignment 2024

Welcome students. The summer break serves as an excellent opportunity to explore literature beyond the confines of the traditional classroom. This years summer reading program is designed to encourage critical thinking, empathy, and a lifelong appreciation for storytelling.

Objective

The primary goal of this assignment is to keep your analytical skills sharp during the break. By engaging with complex texts, you will maintain your reading stamina and prepare for the academic rigors of the upcoming school year. Furthermore, these texts provide a common ground for discussions during the first week of class.

Required Texts

Please select one book from the list provided below based on your upcoming grade level:

  • Grade 9: To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
  • Grade 10: Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
  • Grade 11: The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
  • Grade 12: 1984 by George Orwell

Assignment Requirements

As you read your selected novel, you are required to complete the following tasks:

1. Annotation Journal

Maintain a physical or digital journal where you record at least 10 entries. Each entry should focus on a significant passage, a shift in character development, or a central theme. Explain why you chose the passage and how it contributes to your understanding of the text.

2. Character Analysis Essay

Write a 500-word essay analyzing the protagonist of your chosen book. Consider how the character changes from the beginning of the story to the end. What internal or external forces drive their growth? Provide specific examples from the text to support your claims.

3. Creative Response

Create a visual or multimedia response to the book. Options include:

  • A redesigned book cover with an artist's statement.
  • A playlist of 10 songs that reflect the moods and themes of the novel, with brief explanations for each song choice.
  • A short video review or "book trailer" promoting the text.

Submission Guidelines

All assignments must be submitted via the schools digital portal by the first Friday of the new semester. Please ensure your name, date, and book title are clearly marked on all documents. Late submissions will result in a point deduction according to the standard school grading policy.

Tips for Success

  • Read in small, manageable chunks rather than cramming the entire book in late August.
  • Look up unfamiliar vocabulary to improve your comprehension.
  • Engage with peers; if multiple students choose the same book, start a small study group.

We look forward to hearing your unique perspectives on these literary works. Have a wonderful and productive summer.
