Creating a safe, respectful, and effective environment is the foundation of any successful support group. These ground rules are designed to ensure that every participant feels heard, valued, and protected while working toward shared healing and growth.
1. Confidentiality
What is said in the room, stays in the room. To foster a space of trust, all participants must agree that personal stories, names, and situations shared during sessions are strictly private. Do not discuss other members' experiences with people outside of the group.
2. Mutual Respect
We strive to create a space where everyone feels welcome. Please treat all members with kindness, regardless of differences in background, opinion, or experience. Avoid interrupting others while they are speaking, and refrain from side conversations.
3. Use "I" Statements
Speak from your own perspective. Use "I" statements (e.g., "I feel," "In my experience," "I have found that...") rather than making generalizations or giving advice. This prevents us from speaking for others and keeps the focus on individual personal growth.
4. No Advice Giving
A support group is a space for sharing and listening, not for offering unsolicited advice, suggestions, or "fixing" others. Listen to understand, not to respond. If you are not sure whether a member wants feedback, it is always best to ask, "Would you like some thoughts on this, or are you just looking to be heard?"
5. The Right to Pass
Participation is encouraged, but never forced. You always have the right to "pass" if you are not comfortable sharing or answering a question. Your presence is valuable even when you choose to simply listen.
6. Non-Judgmental Listening
We all come from different walks of life. Please listen with an open mind and heart. Avoid criticizing, shaming, or judging others for their feelings or choices. The goal is to provide empathy and support, not to critique.
7. Be Mindful of Time
To ensure everyone has the opportunity to speak, please be mindful of how much time you take during the sharing portion of our meeting. Try to keep your contributions concise so that others have a fair chance to participate.
8. Physical and Emotional Safety
We are committed to maintaining a space free from harassment, aggression, or intimidation. Any language or behavior that threatens the safety of group members will not be tolerated. If you feel overwhelmed or triggered, please feel free to step away from the room to take a moment for yourself.
9. Commitment to Attendance
Consistency helps build a sense of community and trust. While we understand that life happens, please try to arrive on time and attend regularly. If you know you will be absent, please notify the facilitator in advance whenever possible.
10. One Person Speaks at a Time
To ensure everyone feels respected and heard, please allow only one person to hold the "floor" at any given time. This makes it easier for everyone to engage with the speaker and ensures the meeting remains organized.
