Table of Hiragana Letters

What Is Hiragana?

Hiragana is one of the two native Japanese syllabaries, the other being katakana. While katakana is mainly used for foreign words, onomatopoeia, and scientific terms, hiragana is the backbone of everyday Japanese writing. It represents every sound in the language and is used for native words, grammatical particles, verb endings, and words without kanji.

Each hiragana character corresponds to a single moraa unit of sound that is roughly equivalent to a syllable. The entire set contains 46 basic symbols, plus a handful of diacriticmodified forms and combination characters called yon.

Basic Hiragana Chart

The chart below follows the traditional gojon (座常) ordering, which groups characters by their initial consonant and vowel.

The dashes () indicate that a particular consonantvowel combination does not exist in native Japanese phonology.

Diacritics: dakuten and handakuten

Two small marks can be added to many hiragana characters to change their pronunciation:

  • dakuten () turns ksounds into gsounds, sintoz, tintod, and hintob.
  • handakuten () changes hsounds into psounds.

Combination sounds (yon)

When a small , , or follows an i row kana (, , , , , , , , , , ), a contracted sound is created. These are written as a single unit in modern Japanese.

Base

These contracted sounds are counted as one mora, just like the basic hiragana characters.

How to Learn Hiragana Effectively

  1. Start with the basic 46. Write each character repeatedly while saying its sound aloud. Muscle memory helps retention.
  2. Group by rows. Learn one consonant row at a time (e.g., all the k sounds) before moving to the next.
  3. Practice the diacritics. Once you know the base set, add the dakuten and handakuten forms.
  4. Incorporate yon early. The contracted sounds appear in many common words (e.g., ky).
  5. Read simple texts. Childrens books, hiraganaonly manga, or the Hiragana section of JapaneseTest4You provide realworld exposure.
  6. Use spacedrepetition flashcards. Apps such as Anki or Quizlet let you review characters just before youre likely to forget them.

Consistency beats intensity. Spending 1015 minutes daily on handwriting, reading, and listening will solidify the table in your longterm memory.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Confusing (ne) with (ne) written in cursive. In fast handwriting the two vertical strokes can merge.
  • Mixing up (shi) and (su). The top curve of is longer and smoother.
  • Forgetting the small , , . Writing them as regular sized characters changes the pronunciation (e.g., vs. ).
  • Omitting the nonly character . It is the only hiragana that does not follow the consonantvowel pattern.
