The Germanic branch of the IndoEuropean family once possessed a fully inflected nominal system, much like Latin or Ancient Greek. Over the centuries, the three grammatical genders (masculine, feminine, neuter) have interacted in complex ways with case endings, leading to the diverse patterns we see today in languages such as Old English, Old High German, Icelandic, and even modern German and Dutch.
ProtoGermanic distinguished three genders. Gender assignment was largely lexical, but it also reflected certain semantic tendencies: animate beings tended toward masculine, female beings toward feminine, and inanimate objects often fell into the neuter class. Over time, these tendencies were overridden by phonological and morphological analogies.
Early Germanic languages used four core cases: nominative, accusative, genitive, and dative. Each case had distinct endings for each gender, although many of these endings converged in later stages. Dutch has largely lost the case system, but gender survives in the definite article (de for common gender, het for neuter) and in some pronoun distinctions. Declension now appears mainly in personal pronouns and a few fossilised forms.
Icelandic preserves a robust inflectional paradigm. Gender interacts with case in a way reminiscent of Old Norse, with distinct endings for each gendercase combination. For instance, the masculine noun maur* (man) shows the following singular forms:
Sound changes have been a major driver of gendercase interaction. Vowel reduction, the loss of final consonants, and the weakening of unstressed endings caused formerly distinct case forms to merge. When endings became indistinguishable, gender markers (e.g., the -e of weak feminine nouns) often took on a greater functional load, reinforcing gender distinctions where case distinctions faded.
