The Bridle Joint: Similar to a mortise and tenon but open on the end, the bridle joint provides excellent stability for corners, particularly in table legs and frames. It is highly resistant to twisting forces.
One of the most important lessons a traditional woodworker learns is that wood is a living material. It expands and contracts with changes in humidity. Traditional joints are designed to accommodate this movement. Rather than forcing the wood into a rigid state where it might crack under pressure, these joints allow for slight fluctuations, ensuring that the piece remains intact through changing seasons.
