History
Founded in 1974, the Transit Authority of River City (TARC) was created to provide reliable, affordable public transportation for the growing metropolitan area that surrounds the River. The original network consisted of three bus routes connecting the downtown core with the industrial districts to the north. Over the following decades, TARC expanded into the suburbs, introduced express routes, and adopted new technologies to improve service quality.
Key milestones include:
- 1982: Launch of the first night service, extending operations until midnight.
- 1995: Introduction of lowfloor buses, improving accessibility for passengers with mobility challenges.
- 2004: Integration of a unified fare system with neighboring counties.
- 2012: Adoption of hybrid electric buses, cutting emissions by 20%.
- 2020: Deployment of a realtime tracking app, giving riders live updates on vehicle locations.

Bus Routes
There are currently 58 fixedroute bus lines covering 380 miles of roadway. Routes are categorized into:

Rapid Transit
The RiverLine Light Rail, opened in 2018, runs 17 miles from the northern university district to the southern riverfront. With a 10minute headway during peak periods, the line carries over 12,000 riders daily.
OnDemand MicroTransit
Since 2021, TARC offers a demandresponsive shuttle service called RiverRide in lowdensity areas. Riders can request a vehicle through the TARC app, and a van will pick them up within 15 minutes.

TARCs fleet reflects a commitment to sustainability and passenger comfort.

Standard Fares
- Adult (age 1964): $2.00 per ride.
- Youth (age 618): $1.00 per ride.
- Seniors & disabled (age 65+): $0.75 per ride.
- Children under 6 ride free with a paying adult.
Passes
- 24Hour Pass $5.00 (unlimited rides).
- 30Day Pass $60.00 (unlimited rides).
- Student Pass $30.00 (valid at participating colleges).
- LowIncome Fare Card $1.00 per ride (eligible applicants receive a discount card).
All fares can be paid with the TARC mobile app, contactless smart cards, or cash (exact change only).
Future Plans
Looking ahead, TARC is focused on expanding service coverage, reducing environmental impact, and improving rider experience.
Network Expansion
Three new bus corridors are slated for construction by 2027, connecting the growing eastern suburbs to the downtown core. Additionally, a second lightrail line (RiverLine East) will add 12 miles of track.
Electrification
By 2030, TARC aims to have 80% of its bus fleet fully electric. Funding for additional charging stations is already secured through state and federal grants.
Technology Upgrades
Planned upgrades include:
- AIbased predictive scheduling to further reduce wait times.
- Expanded WiFi coverage on all vehicles.
- Enhanced accessibility features such as audible stop announcements in multiple languages.
