Department of Ancient History, Archaeology and Culture

Program Objectives

Core Curriculum Structure
Semester I & II: Foundations of Ancient History
- History of Ancient India (Prehistoric to 650 CE): An introduction to sources, the Indus Valley Civilization, Vedic society, and the rise of the Mauryan and Gupta Empires.
- Introduction to Archaeology: Basic concepts, archaeological methods, exploration techniques, and site documentation.
Semester III & IV: World Civilizations and Cultural Studies
- Ancient World Civilizations: A comparative study of Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, and Greece.
- Art and Architecture in Ancient India: Evolution of iconography, temple architecture (Nagara, Dravida, and Vesara styles), and rock-cut caves.
Semester V & VI: Specialization and Practical Fieldwork
- Epigraphy and Numismatics: Decipherment of ancient scripts (Brahmi and Kharosthi) and the study of ancient coinage as historical evidence.
- Heritage Management and Museology: The philosophy of conservation, museum curation, and public outreach.
- Fieldwork and Excavation: A mandatory practical component where students participate in field archaeology to gain hands-on experience in stratigraphic analysis and artifact handling.
