About Us
The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (UUF) of Newark, Delaware, is a welcoming congregation that embraces spiritual growth, social justice, and the free exchange of ideas. Our doors are open to people of all ages, backgrounds, sexual orientations, and belief systems. Whether you are searching for a place to worship, a community of thoughtful friends, or a platform for service, you will find a supportive home here.
Our Beliefs & Values
Unitarian Universalism does not require adherence to a single creed. Instead, we are guided by seven principles that shape our lives and actions:
- Respect for the inherent worth and dignity of every person.
- Justice, equity, and compassion in human relations.
- Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth.
- The free and responsible search for truth and meaning.
- The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregation.
- Love of learning and the open sharing of ideas.
- Respect for the interdependent web of all existence.
These principles inspire our worship, our outreach, and our daily interactions.
Programs & Activities
Worship Services
We hold a Sunday worship service at 10:30a.m. in the historic St. Marks Hall on the University of Delaware campus. Services blend music, reflection, and a message that draws from many traditions.
Adult Education
Weekly discussion circles explore topics such as ethics, environmental stewardship, and world religions. Guest speakers and community members lead many of these sessions.
Youth & Childrens Ministry
Our youth program offers a safe space for teens to explore identity, social justice, and creativity. Sunday School for children ages 312 provides storytelling, crafts, and a foundation in the UU principles.
Social Justice & Service
We partner with local shelters, food banks, and environmental groups. Quarterly service projects include park cleanups, clothing drives, and advocacy workshops.
Our History
The fellowship was founded in 1974 by a small group of university faculty and students who wanted a nondogmatic spiritual home. Over the decades, the congregation has grown from a handful of members to more than 200 regular participants. In 1998 we acquired the current meeting space, a renovated 19thcentury building that blends historic charm with modern accessibility.
Key milestones include:
- 1979 First interfaith dialogue series with local churches and synagogues.
- 1992 Launch of the Friends of the Environment stewardship program.
- 2005 Opening of the Rainbow Kitchen, a community caf serving vegan and locally sourced fare.
- 2018 Adoption of a formal racial equity plan, leading to new outreach initiatives.
