History
The University of Madras was established on 15 September 1857 under the Charter of Lord Lawrence, the then GovernorGeneral of India. It began with three affiliated collegesMadras Christian College, Presidency College and the Government College of Arts and Science. Designed to promote higher education in the Madras Presidency, it quickly expanded its reach, becoming a pivotal intellectual hub for Southern India.
Early milestones include the introduction of modern scientific courses in the late 19th century and the foundation of the Department of Physics in 1887, one of the first such departments in India. The university played a vital role in the Indian independence movement, with several faculty members and students participating in the freedom struggle.
Campus & Infrastructure
The main campus, popularly known as the South Campus, spreads over 365 acres in the Guindy area of Chennai. Iconic redbrick buildings such as the Senate House, the S. Vedalamurugan Library and the University Auditorium blend colonial architecture with modern facilities.
