The Vermonter

The Vermonter is Amtraks flagship intercity passenger train that runs between Washington, D.C., and St. Albans, Vermont. It serves a vital northsouth corridor through the heart of New England, linking major population centers with rural communities along the way.

  • Frequency: One roundtrip per day, with additional weekday service during peak seasons.
  • Major stops: Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York Penn Station, Hartford, Springfield (MA), Northampton, Brattleboro, White River Junction, Montpelier, and St. Albans.

Ridership & Performance

Before the pandemic, the Vermonter carried roughly 200,000 passengers annually. 2023 data show a rebound to about 180,000 riders, driven by increased interest in sustainable travel and improved ontime performance after upgrades to the Connecticut River Line.

Valley Flyer

The Valley Flyer is a newer Amtrak service that operates as a daytime regional train between New Haven, Connecticut, and Greenfield, Massachusetts. It is designed to serve the Pioneer Valley and provide a convenient alternative to automobile travel on the busy I91 corridor.

  • Length of route: About 101 miles (162 km)
  • Frequency: Two roundtrips per day, Monday through Friday; limited weekend service.
  • Major stops: New Haven, Wallingford, Meriden, Hartford, Windsor Locks, Northampton, Amherst, and Greenfield.

Ridership & Impact

Since its launch in 2019, the Valley Flyer has averaged 70,000 boardings per year. 2024 reports indicate an 11% increase, reflecting growing demand for commuterfriendly service and coordinated schedules with local transit agencies.

Future Outlook

Both services are slated for enhancements over the next five years:

  • Vermonter: Planned electrification of the segment between New Haven and Springfield, faster schedules, and a possible second daily roundtrip.
  • Valley Flyer: Extension northward to Greenfields neighboring town of Deerfield, addition of weekend service, and integration with the upcoming commuter rail project in Hartford.

State and federal investment in rail infrastructure is expected to improve reliability, reduce travel times, and attract more riders seeking alternatives to congested highways.
