Overview
The West Bengal Police (WBP) announced a special recruitment drive in 2020 for Technical Staff under the Coastal Security Scheme (CSS). This initiative was part of the Government of Indias broader effort to strengthen coastal surveillance, maritime lawenforcement, and disaster response capabilities along the Bay of Bengal. The recruitment was open to candidates across the state and was intended to fill vacant posts in the technical wing of the police force, which deals with electronic surveillance, communication systems, marine hardware maintenance, and data analysis.
The CSS was launched in 2012 and has since expanded to include state police, the Indian Coast Guard, and other maritime agencies. West Bengal, with a coastline of about 157km, required a dedicated cadre of technically skilled personnel to manage coastal radars, Automatic Identification System (AIS) stations, sonar equipment, and the Integrated Coastal Surveillance System (ICSS).
Eligibility Criteria
- B.Tech/ B.E. in Electronics & Communication, Electrical, Computer Science, Marine Engineering or related streams.
- Graduates with a minimum of 55% marks (50% for SC/ST/OBC). Candidates with a valid GATE score in the relevant discipline are also eligible.
- Minimum age: 20 years
- Maximum age: 28 years (relaxation up to 3 years for OBC, 5 years for SC/ST, and 2 years for ExServicemen).
- Height: Minimum 165cm for males, 152cm for females.
- Chest (in expanded position): Minimum 84cm with a minimum expansion of 5cm (male only).
- Vision: 6/6 (right eye) and 6/9 (left eye) with or without corrective lenses.
- Physical Endurance: Ability to run 1.6km in 9minutes (male) / 11minutes (female).
- Indian nationality.
- No criminal record; must possess a character certificate.
- Must be medically fit as per the Police Medical Examination guidelines.
Postings, Salary & Benefits
Successful candidates are appointed as Technical Assistants (TA) or Junior Technical Officers (JTO) depending on qualifications and experience. The posting locations primarily include:
- Coastal Police Stations Digha, Shankarpur, Bakkhali, and Sundarbans.
- Integrated Coastal Surveillance Centres Kolkata, Haldia, and Kharagpur.
- Marine Equipment Workshops Kolkata Naval Dockyard and related facilities.
Salary Structure (as per the 7th Pay Commission)
- Technical Assistant (Entry Level) Pay Level 6: 35,400 1,12,400 per month.
- Junior Technical Officer Pay Level 7: 44,900 1,42,400 per month.
Additional allowances include:
- Dearness Allowance (DA) applicable as per government rates.
- House Rent Allowance (HRA) 24% of basic (for metro) or 16% (nonmetro).
- Special Coastal Allowance 8,000 per month for postings in the Sundarbans zone.
- Transport, Medical, and Pension benefits as per state police rules.
Application Process
The recruitment was conducted entirely online through the official West Bengal Police portal. The key steps were:
- Registration: Create an account on wbpolice.gov.in using a valid email address and mobile number.
- Filling the Online Application Form: Provide personal details, educational qualifications, and upload scanned copies of required documents (photograph, signature, certificates, and ID proof).
- Application Fee Payment: A nonrefundable fee of 550 for General/OBC candidates and 250 for SC/ST candidates was payable via credit/debit card or net banking.
- Submission & Confirmation: After successful payment, submit the form and note the generated Application Number for future reference.
- Admit Card Download: Admit cards for the written test were made available on the portal 10 days before the exam date.
- Written Examination: Objective type test (100questions; 100marks) covering General Knowledge, English, Reasoning, and Technical subjects.
- Physical Standard Test (PST): Candidates who cleared the written test attended the PST at designated centers.
- Interview & Document Verification: Final candidates were called for a personal interview and verification of original documents.
- Medical Examination: Conducted at the Police Medical Examination Centre (PMEC) in Kolkata.
- Final Selection: Merit list compiled based on written test, PST, interview performance, and medical fitness.
