Overview
The Westmark Credit Union Scholarship 2022 is a financialaid program designed to help highschool seniors, college undergraduates, and graduate students who demonstrate academic excellence, community involvement, and a clear career focus. Established by Westmark Credit Union to support the educational aspirations of members and community residents, the scholarship aims to lessen the burden of tuition, books, and other educationrelated expenses.
Each year, a panel of Westmark staff and community leaders reviews applications and awards up to ten scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $5,000. The 2022 cycle continued the tradition of recognizing students who embody the credit unions values of integrity, service, and personal growth.
Eligibility Requirements
- Must be a United States citizen or permanent resident.
- Must be a member of Westmark Credit Union or a resident of the counties served by Westmark.
- Highschool seniors must have a minimum 3.0 GPA; undergraduate and graduate students must maintain a 3.2 GPA or higher.
- Demonstrated involvement in community service, extracurricular activities, or leadership roles.
- Must be pursuing a degree or certificate program at an accredited institution.
- Applicants may submit only one application for the 2022 award cycle.
How to Apply
Applicants must complete an online form on the Westmark Credit Union website. The application includes the following components:
- Personal Information name, address, contact details, and membership status.
- Academic Information name of school, program of study, current GPA, and expected graduation date.
- Essay a 500word essay answering the prompt: How will this scholarship help you achieve your educational and career goals, and how do you plan to give back to your community?
- Reference Letters two letters: one from a teacher or academic advisor and another from an employer, coach, or community leader.
- Transcripts unofficial PDF copies of the most recent academic transcripts.
- Proof of Residency or Membership a copy of a Westmark debit card, a recent statement, or a utility bill showing a qualifying address.
The deadline for all 2022 applications was October15,2022. Submissions after this date were not considered.
Selection Process
The selection committee evaluates each application against four criteria:
- Academic Achievement GPA, coursework difficulty, and academic awards.
- Community Impact volunteer hours, leadership roles, and measurable outcomes of service projects.
- Career Vision clarity of future goals, relevance of proposed field of study, and alignment with Westmarks community focus.
- Writing Quality ability to convey ideas, organization, and originality in the essay.
After scoring, the committee narrows the pool to a shortlist of finalists, who may be contacted for a brief interview. Final decisions are announced in early December, and award letters are mailed directly to recipients.
Scholarship Amounts & Disbursement
In 2022, Westmark awarded the following amounts:
- One $5,000 scholarship
- Two $3,000 scholarships
- Three $2,000 scholarships
- Four $1,000 scholarships
Funds are disbursed directly to the students school of enrollment to cover tuition, fees, or books. If the school declines direct payment, a check is mailed to the student.

While each year brings new faces, the 2021 and 2022 recipients illustrate the diversity of goals supported by the scholarship:
- Emily Rodriguez a senior at Sacramento State pursuing a B.S. in Environmental Science. She used her $3,000 award to fund a research project on local water quality.
- Jamal Harris an associatedegree student at American River College studying Information Technology. He allocated his $2,000 scholarship toward certification exam fees.
- Aisha Patel a graduate student at UC Davis completing a Masters in Public Health. Her $5,000 award helped cover living expenses while she completed her thesis on community health outreach.
