This document outlines the professional working agreement between the counsellor and the client. The purpose of this agreement is to create a safe, transparent, and supportive environment for our therapeutic work together. By understanding these expectations, we can focus on your personal growth and wellbeing.
Counselling is a collaborative process designed to help you explore your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is not about providing quick fixes or advice, but rather facilitating a space where you can gain self-awareness, develop coping strategies, and work toward your personal goals.
Confidentiality is a cornerstone of the therapeutic relationship. Everything discussed during our sessions remains private. However, there are specific legal and ethical exceptions to confidentiality, which include:
In such instances, I will always endeavor to discuss the situation with you first, where possible, before taking any further action.
Sessions typically last 50 minutes. It is important to arrive on time to ensure you receive the full benefit of the scheduled session. If you are late, the session will still conclude at the original time to respect the schedule of other clients.
I understand that unexpected circumstances arise. If you need to cancel or reschedule, please provide at least 24 hours' notice. Cancellations made with less than 24 hours' notice or missed appointments without notification will incur the full session fee.
The space for our work is within the sessions themselves. While I am available via email for administrative matters, such as scheduling or changing appointments, I cannot provide therapeutic support or crisis intervention via email. If you are experiencing a crisis, please contact your local emergency services or a dedicated crisis helpline.
Payment is expected at the time of the session unless otherwise arranged. Invoices or receipts can be provided upon request. Fees are reviewed annually, and you will be given reasonable notice of any changes to the current rate.
You have the right to end therapy at any time. I encourage you to discuss this decision with me during a session, as a final "closing" session can be very beneficial for processing your progress and bringing the work to a constructive conclusion. Similarly, I reserve the right to end the professional relationship if I feel that I am not the most suitable person to support your specific needs, in which case I will provide you with appropriate referrals.
Our work is a partnership. Your active participation and honesty are essential to the success of the therapeutic process. Please feel free to raise any questions or concerns you have about our sessions at any time; open communication helps ensure that our work remains aligned with your needs.
