Junior Engineer (Mechanical Supervisor)

1. Overview

The Workshop Stream Promotion Exam is conducted by various state and central Public Works Departments (PWD) and similar authorities to promote Junior Engineers (JEs) to the post of Mechanical Supervisor. The exam assesses the candidates technical knowledge, practical workshop skills, and supervisory capabilities. Successful candidates are posted to workshops dealing with plant maintenance, hydraulic systems, fabrication, and other mechanical operations.

The syllabus is designed to test both theoretical understanding and handson experience gathered during the JE tenure. It is essential to study the official notification of the recruiting authority, as minor variations may exist between organizations.

2. Exam Structure

The promotion exam usually consists of two parts:

  • Written Test Objective or multiplechoice questions (MCQs). Total marks: 100; duration: 2 hours.
  • Practical / Interview Handson tasks, vivavoce, and document verification. Marks: 50; duration: 3045 minutes.

Passing criteria: Minimum 40% in each part and overall 50%.

  • Basic CAD concepts common commands in AutoCAD or similar software.

3.4. Supervisory & Managerial Skills (20marks)

  • Workorder processing, job scheduling, resource allocation.
  • Quality control basics inspection techniques, use of gauges, statistical process control.
  • Team leadership, communication, conflict resolution.
  • Basic accounting for workshop material costing, inventory management.

3.5. General Awareness & Reasoning (optional 10marks)

Some authorities include a short section on current affairs, basic quantitative aptitude, and logical reasoning.

4. Preparation Tips

  1. Know the Official Notification Download the latest syllabus and pattern from the recruiting agencys website.
  2. Create a Study Plan Allocate 23 weeks for each major topic, reserving the final week for mock tests.
  3. Use Standard Textbooks For strength of materials, Mechanics of Materials by Beer & Johnston; for fluids, Fluid Mechanics by Munson; for welding, Welding: Principles and Applications by Geoffrey Davies.
  4. Practical Exposure Spend time in the workshop revisiting daily operations, maintenance logs, and safety protocols.
