Body Condition Scoring (BCS)
WSAVA endorses a 9point BCS system for both cats and dogs. Scores 45 are ideal, 13 indicate undercondition, and 69 indicate overcondition. The guideline emphasises the need to combine BCS with Muscle Condition Scoring (MCS) for a more complete picture of lean body mass.

Taking a Detailed Dietary History
A thorough history helps determine nutrient adequacy and identify potential problem ingredients. Key questions include:
What brand(s) and product type (dry, wet, raw, homemade) are fed?
How many meals per day and what portion sizes?
Are treats, supplements, or table scraps given? If so, how often?
Any recent changes in diet or feeding routine?
Owners perception of the pets appetite and satiety.
When possible, ask the owner to bring a sample of the pet food packaging or a written label. This aids in checking for compliance with AAFCO (or equivalent) nutrient profiles.

Determine caloric needs use Resting Energy Requirement (RER) formulas and adjust for activity, neuter status, and disease.
Select an appropriate diet choose a commercial diet that meets the pets lifestage and medical needs, or formulate a balanced homeprepared diet with a veterinary nutritionist.
Set measurable goals e.g., 12% body weight change per week for weight loss, or increase muscle score by one point in 8 weeks.
Provide owner education demonstrate portion measurement, discuss treat limits, and outline signs of success or failure.
Schedule reevaluation typically 46 weeks for weight loss, 812 weeks for maintenance adjustments.
